Cha Tra Mue Review - Aroi Mak Mak Thai Iced Milk Tea to Combat the Summer Heat!
Cha Tra Mue Review
To Singaporeans, there's nothing better than eating and shopping! Many of us enjoy travelling to Bangkok for the cheap food and even cheaper shopping. Of course, the flood of Thai eateries also reached our shores in the recent years. This also applies to Thai Iced Milk Tea, otherwise known as Cha Yen (ชาเย็น) which is typically made from strongly brewed Ceylon Tea Leaves with added colouring to give that bright distinct orange colour.
This wonderful chilled drink is often mixed with condensed milk, evaporated milk (and sometimes coconut milk) and served with ice shavings or cubes for the perfect balance of sweet and milky tea!

Cha Tra Mue, which translates to "Number One Brand", is one of the most established Thai Tea brand in Thailand. Cha Tra Mue has been supplying tea all over Thailand for past 7 decades; and has now expanded to Singapore to serve Original Thai Iced Milk Tea and many more.

We tried 3 out of the 9 different flavours available on FoodLine: Original Thai Tea, Thai Milk Green Tea, and Thai Milk Tea Extra Gold! A bonus drink that was available only for the month of June (Milk Foam series) was also served! The drinks made us all go Aroi Mak Mak ?!
Original Thai Tea @ $3 per cup

Taking a sip of the Original Thai Tea, a strong tea essence could be tasted. That works well for me, because with other Thai Tea shops, the taste of condensed milk tends to overpower the tea (and the drink ends up as Milk Tea). Having tried the same drink back in Bangkok, I'm glad that this drink was not overly saccharine. From what I understand, Thai people love their drinks sweet, but the recipe was tweaked to suit the palates of the locals in Singapore!
Thai Milk Green Tea @ $3 per cup

Next up, we also tried the Thai Milk Green Tea. If you're looking to try something new, or simply a fan of green teas, this drink is right up your alley. According to Cha Tra Mue, real Green Tea leaves were brewed for a few hours to ensure the perfect balance of spice and green tea. I was expecting the drink to taste like regular green tea mixed with condensed milk but the green tea scent and flavour was really well infused into the drink! I shared the drink with my colleagues and many of them also picked this as their favourite drink! A definite must try!
Thai Milk Tea Extra Gold @ $3.20 per cup

Upon enquiring what "Extra Gold" means, I discovered that it actually is just a stronger brew of the Original Thai Tea! If you look at the colour of the drink, it is almost indistinguishable with the Original Thai Tea but once you taste them, you'll be able to tell the difference. Extra Gold had a stronger tea essence aftertaste that lingers longer and is great for those who like their tea strong. Comparing Thai Tea to the Singapore version of tea we order from coffee shops, Extra Gold tastes like an exquisite version of Teh Kao.
Milk Foam Series: Thai Milk Green Tea with Milk Foam

Green Tea Powder was also sprinkled on top of the milk foam. The cups served for the Milk Foam series was also different as it was a special drink introduced in the month of June!
