Did you know that food waste is one of the biggest waste streams in Singapore? For the last 10 years, food waste has been rapidly growing in Singapore with an increment of 30%. In just 2018, there's a generation of 783 million kg of food waste which weighs more than 54,000 double-decker buses. If that doesn't convince you to reduce food waste, food waste can also have a detrimental impact on the people of Singapore as 90% of our food supply is imported from external sources. When food is wasted, more resources have to be spent on importing food which could affect the food security of Singapore. We can all play a part in reducing food waste and I would like to share with you 3 ways of doing so!
Avoid buying too much

Do you often throw away rotten or spoiled fruits and vegetables from your fridge? This is the likelihood of overbuying. To avoid food waste, simply make a couple of short trips to the grocery store each week rather than one long trip at the end of the month! This will help you to save costs as you will not overbuy food that you cannot consume in time.
Always make a shopping list

It's important to have a shopping list as it can remind you of the exact things you need to buy and to prevent yourself from buying unnecessary items. Without a shopping list, you might purchase items that you already have which could lead to food waste. To start, write down the inventory of the food supplies that you have at home and the things that you need to buy. This would help you become more organized and also help to play a part in reducing food waste.
Store food correctly

Foods like vegetables and fruits are perishable items. Some of the ways to prevent spoilage are to keep your refrigerator below 5°C, storing cooked foods on shelves that are above raw foods in your refrigerator, and storing food in sealed containers.
