5 Chinese New Year Traditions and What They Mean!
Chinese New Year is here soon and most of us are preparing
for this joyous and happy occasion! Although it is slightly different this year
due to Covid-19 but we’ve all come a long way and let’s all embrace the new
norm with the happiest and positive attitude!
So lets check out 4 CNY traditions we do and what they
actually mean!

#1 Exchanging Oranges
This is one of the most known tradition every new year but
do you know the reason behind such tradition? As we all know this action
symbolizes luck and wealth but they are also known as “song gam” in Cantonese,
which translate to “giving gold”!
The act of exchanging oranges goes all the way back to
ancient practices, and it will always be 2 oranges, because of “Shuang Xi”
(double happiness).

#2 Do Not Break Ceramics or Glass
Normally we only heard about it from our parents or
grandparents, but we never really know the reason. Well, it is because it is a
taboo that believed to bring misfortune and money loss to the person who broke
the item, especially when we are just embarking on a new journey in the new
year.
But don’t really if you really did break them (choi choi
choi!) Just wrap the broken item with a piece of red paper or cloth and say
auspicious phrase like “sui sui ping an” as “sui” both refers to “year” and
“broken” to drive the bad luck away!

#4 Doing Lo-Hei
What’s Chinese New Year if you have not lo-hei for at least
once? The “lo” action where we toss the mixed vegetables and ingredients as
high as we can is to gain better fortune in the new year!
Do you know that this practice only happens in Singapore,
Malaysia and Indonesia only? WOW.

#5 Having Reunion Dinner
Reunion Dinner is perhaps the most important tradition of
every Chinese New Year. “Tuan Yuan” translate to “gathering around the family’s
hearth”. In the ancient times, family members would drop everything on hand and
some even travel back home to reunion with their family. Symbolizing that the
family ties remain strong in the new year!
