5 Tips to Deal With Workplace Anger
At some points, you’ll feel irritated at everything and anyone at work: you did everything you could but your client or your boss is still unsatisfied with your work etc. It happens to me all the time, but don’t you think the working culture in Singapore made confrontation as dreadful as it sounds?
I find myself often blaming others or saying hurtful things and ultimately, start beating myself up for being upset and then get even more upset. Yes, it IS a vicious cycle. But no, it is not entirely a bad thing, it is just how the human body works to cope with the stress we are facing
Well, here are some tips that I follow now whenever things go south! It may or may not be useful depending on the situation, but you may wish to take it into consideration next time.😊

1) Acknowledge your anger, don’t fight it
You won’t be in the right state to manage your anger when you’re upset. So, accept that you’re upset and tell yourself that it is normal to feel the way you do. This direct control over your own emotions will calm you down and allow you to focus on resolving the issue.

2) Disrupt your emotions with physical activity
Before your anger gets the better of you, stand up and step away from your desk. Go for a short walk, stairs climbing or just to take a few deep breaths. You’ll learn to control your anger in the long run.

3) Be in their shoes
Yes it’s hard, but consider the perspectives of those who angered you, understand why they did what they did. Even if you can’t seem to understand completely, focus on the things that happened prior, the situation or communication issues. Maybe you will then realise they did not intentionally frustrate or irritate you.

4) Zoom in on the solution not the problem
Don’t leave yourself dwelling on with negative energy for long. Focus on the learning point that you can retrieve from the situation and move on productively. Work on it, and maybe you’ll even avoid such situations entirely in the future! Extinguish the fire (anger & fear) with logicand reasons.

5) Plan Something Fun
Plan something fun! Maybe a shopping spree, a movie or a delicious meal. Pamper yourself and rant it out to someone you trust. You’ll definitely feel better and will be ready to take on the world once again!
