This holiday season, I had the pleasure of experiencing the Jolly Western Xmas Full Buffet (8 Courses + FREE Log Cake + Drinks) at Hock Hoe Heng, and it was a culinary adventure that truly captured the spirit of celebration. From an array of vibrant dishes to delightful desserts, each bite was a treat. Let’s dive into the festive highlights!

1. Scallop Vermicelli

Kicking off the buffet was the Scallop Vermicelli, a standout dish that set the tone for the meal. This dish balances tender, sweet scallops with the aromatic depth of garlic, creating a savory yet light flavor profile. The vermicelli is soft and silky, soaking up the garlic and seasoning, while the scallops retain their subtle oceanic sweetness. The garlic adds warmth without overpowering, and any additional umami or heat from soy or chili enhances the overall harmony. It’s a well-balanced, satisfying dish that’s flavorful without being heavy.

 

2. Teriyaki Chicken Steak

Next, the Teriyaki Chicken Steak is a dish that was both visually stunning and incredibly satisfying. The chicken was grilled to perfection, with a smoky flavor harmonizing beautifully with the sweet teriyaki glaze. Juicy and tender, it was garnished with scallions, making it a memorable main dish.

 

3. Tempura Battered Prawns

The Tempura Prawns were a delightful addition to the buffet. Each prawn was perfectly fried, featuring a crispy exterior that gave way to succulent shrimp. Paired with a tangy dipping mayo sauce, these prawns were addictive — perfect for mingling with fellow diners during the festive celebration.

 

4. Breaded Hoki with Sesame Dressing

I was pleasantly surprised by the Breaded Hoki served with sesame dressing. The hoki, coated in a golden breadcrumb crust, was flaky and moist, while the sesame dressing added a nutty depth that complemented the fish beautifully. It was a fantastic seafood option that stood out on the buffet table.

 

5. Sautéed Vegetables

Accompanying the mains, the Sautéed Vegetables offered a vibrant mix of seasonal produce. Crisp bell peppers, snap peas, and broccoli were tossed in a light soy sauce, retaining their natural crunch and freshness. This healthy yet flavorful side was a perfect balance to the richer dishes.

 

6. Smoked Black Pepper Duck Breast

The Smoked Black Pepper Duck Breast was another highlight of the buffet. The duck featured a robust black pepper crust that imparted a smoky, spicy kick, creating a delightful flavor experience with each bite. It was juicy and satisfying, making it a festive favorite.

 

7. Vanilla Cream Puff

The puff pastry is perfectly crisp on the outside, with a light, airy texture that gives way to a rich, creamy interior. The vanilla cream filling is velvety smooth and decadently sweet, with a deep, natural vanilla flavor that feels luxurious without being overwhelming. The balance between the flaky pastry and the soft, custard-like cream creates a satisfying contrast in both texture and taste. 

 

8. Fresh Mango Pudding

Finally, the Mango Pudding wraps up this festive feast. Its smooth texture and vibrant mango flavor and fresh fruits provided a refreshing finish. Not overly sweet, it allowed the natural fruitiness to shine through, making it an excellent palate cleanser.
