Hock Hoe Heng Review - A Scrumptious Chinese New Year Feast!

With the year coming to an end, I'm pretty sure the next holiday we're all looking forward to would be Chinese New Year! As we all know, a good celebration wouldn't be perfect without a hearty and scrumptious Chinese New Year-themed feast! That's where Hock Hoe Heng restaurant comes in. A Chinese New Year feast just isn't complete without the tossing of Yu Sheng! Well, the Yu Sheng set from Hock Hoe Heng comes with everything you need including daikon, carrots, red pickled ginger, and much more. The Yu Sheng is tasty and you can tell that the ingredients are fresh too. I just wished that there would be more abalone included to share the "huat" and happiness with everyone. Rating: 4/5

This platter comes with a selection of prawn rolls, spring rolls, and dumplings. They were all fried to perfection and were still crispy even after a while. They tasted fresh and were perfectly seasoned as well. If you have some, you could dip them in chili or your sauce of choice for some kick! Rating: 4/5

The set also came with some large portions of the Lotus Leaf Fried Rice. The whole dish was really fragrant and there was a nice mix of ingredients in the dish too. As a main, this is perfect and it also aptly embodies the spirit of Chinese New Year! Rating: 4.5/5

The set also came with a large grouper accompanied with sweet and sour sauce. One nice thing I liked about this was that the fish was packaged separately from the sauce which meant that the fish wouldn't soak it all up and become mushy in transit. The sauce was really good and I would also recommend dipping the spring rolls and prawn rolls in the sauce too for an extra flavor punch. Rating: 4/5

The prawns in this set were also cooked to perfection and didn't have the tough and chewy texture that you would expect from lower-quality restaurants. You can tell that the prawns were fresh too and it was all seasoned perfectly. This would surely be a hit among your guests and family too! Rating: 4.5/5

This dish is one of my favorites in the whole set and for good reason. It was really flavourful and had plenty of well-seasoned and fresh ingredients included in it. There was an abundance of mushrooms, clams, dates, beancurd skin, and lettuce all covered in the tasty sauce. Rating: 4.5/5

This dish is a classic and is a must-have in every Chinese New Year feast. There were plenty of goodies in this dish including fish maw, mushrooms, and much more! The broth was savoury but not too salty and you won't get that MSG taste that you would get from cheaper alternatives. This was a nice dish that rounded up the whole set. Rating: 4.5/5

Finally, for dessert, we have a classic yam paste dish with Ginko nuts. The paste is perfect and it's not too sweet as well. Its texture and consistency are nice too and it wasn't all clumpy and yet it also wasn;t watery at all. It's just simply the perfect way to end off a hearty meal. Rating: 4/5
