Is Singapore’s tap water safe to drink?
Anyone who has been through National Service or participated in Uniformed Groups will brush this question off. Drinking water almost always means tap water to them.
There are times when my friends or family members screamed at me to stop refilling my bottle from the tap since they believe that the water should be boiled or filtered at least if we want to drink it. Call me stubborn, but I will wait for the area to be clear of prying eyes and try again later. Why? No special reason, it is just faster. Haha.
SO IS IT TRULY SAFE?
The answer is YES! Like confirm chop, you won’t get a stomach-ache from tap water. This isn’t just based on my experience! It is written clearly on the PUB website ok!
PUB has mentioned that they have put in place "a comprehensive and robust sampling and monitoring programme to ensure our water quality from source to tap", verifying that the water supplied is safe for consumption.
In fact, the PUB’s website has discouraged households from using filtration devices such as water filters and purifiers. This is because, if such filters are not cleaned or replaced regularly, bacteria could grow on them!
However, most of us think that tap water is not clean mainly due to our psychological barrier especially at public taps such as those at hawker centres or in public toilets!
A study was conducted by CNA’s Talking Point, a total of 15 tap water samples were collected from various sources (5 from hawker centres, 5 from HDB Flats across SG, 5 from eateries and shopping centres) and the results all came back to affirm that water is indeed safe to drink straight from local taps!
Why Do Some Households Still Boil Water?
Habit. This is probably passed down by the older generations when safe drinkable tap water isn’t available. Another reason? Well, this is a weird one, some people prefer the taste of boiled water.
No matter what, tap water is safe to drink! Remember to drink up everyone!
