As most people are busy with their everyday lives, it's difficult to make many trips to the grocery store to get fresh ingredients for their meals. This often leads to grocery purchases that include processed food as they have a longer shelf life and take lesser time to prepare as compared to fresh ingredients. Before I delve any further into the effects of consuming processed food, I would like to define processed food so that you would know what they are. Processed food covers a wide range of items. Any food that is frozen, canned, dried, baked, or pasteurized are likely to be processed food. Some examples of processed food are cereal, cheese, milk, cookies, and potato chips. So, are they bad for you? Let us find out!
Added sugar

Most processed food tend to have added sugar and, often, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). HCFS is a sweetener that is made from corn starch. Similar to other sugars when consumed excessively, it can lead to tooth decay, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. This means that the HFCS used in processed food contains no essential nutrients and is high in calories as well. Thus, by consuming too much processed food can put your health at risk.
Artificial ingredients
Were there times where you tried reading the ingredients on the packaging of the processed food, but it's filled with unrecognizable words? Those words are likely to be artificial chemicals that are used to make the food more palatable. The types of artificial chemicals used in your processed food include preservatives, artificial colouring, chemical flavouring, and texturing agents. With these many chemicals in your processed food, it's wise to only consume them once in a while.
Refined carbohydrates

Have you encountered the issue of craving for more food after consuming processed food? Well, it's not your fault. The carbohydrates found in processed food are called refined carbohydrates which are different from normal carbohydrates. Refined carbohydrates are broken down easily in the body which causes a rapid spike in blood sugar and insulin levels. When these levels are affected, a person may experience increased food cravings or low energy levels. So, if you're wondering why you always feel hungry or lethargic after eating processed packed meals, this is probably the cause!
In conclusion, it's alright to eat processed food once in a while as they will not have a drastic impact on the human body. However, when consumed excessively, it will harm your health as it's filled with lots of added sugar and artificial ingredients! Sometimes, spending a little time to cook your meals can have a huge impact on your health in the long run!
