Can Humans Eat Dog Food?

There might be times of economic crisis or emergency where we have to find other alternatives for our food source. For instance, there might be a shortage of food or insufficient funds to make purchases from the grocery stores which would let you wonder if dog foods are a viable option to get you out of the bind. Well, we do share our food with our dog from time to time, but can it work the other way round too? This article is written to give you a nugget of knowledge as well as the side effects of consuming dog food.

Short-term consumption is likely to be safe

Dog food production standards aren't the same as human food as it was not intended for humans. However, a small amount of dog food is likely to be safe as dog food is typically made of animal by-products, grains, soybeans, vitamins, and minerals, creating a nutritionally balanced diet for your pet. The animal by-products that are found in dog food may cause people to avoid it as it is made up of scraps of meat, ground bones, skin, organs, and damaged animal parts. Although dog food is not dangerous to consume, it contains Vitamin K which can be toxic to humans if consumed in high dosage. You shouldn't try to consume dog food regularly or on a long-term basis as it can be toxic.

Different nutritional needs

As mentioned earlier, dog food is generally safe to consume in small portions as long as it's not a regular part of your diet. However, humans' diets are different compared to dogs as dog food lacks certain nutrients and vitamins to keep a person healthy. For example, we need Vitamin C as it helps to promote good skin health and immune function in humans. This vitamin can't be produced in our body which makes it a necessity for us to get it from the food we eat. On the other hand, dogs can produce Vitamin C in their liver which is not necessary for them to include in their diet. You shouldn't try to rely primarily on dog food as your main source of nutrition as the total nutrition composition isn't enough for humans.

Risk of developing foodborne illness

Dog food has its risk too, especially food safety. Similar to the type of food that we eat, mishandling dog food such as poor proper storage or handling can lead the food to be contaminated with bacteria which can make you sick. It's important to follow the guidelines on the package to store your dog food properly to ensure the safety of you and your dog. Even if you store your dog food properly, it is not encouraged for you to consume it as the food might be contaminated with harmful bacteria during the processing stage.

In conclusion, although dog food is generally safe to consume in small portions, it does not have an adequate nutritional level for humans, and it might also increase the risk of developing foodborne illnesses. You should not try to consume dog food regularly or on a long-term basis!
