Cold Brew, What’s the Hype?

For coffee lovers, a cold brew is the perfect cup of joe for the warm weather. Have you ever wondered why people love cold brew? I personally have not tried a cold brew, you see, I’m more of a tea person. But I’ve done some research and these are some facts about cold brew that I did not know about.

Cold brews are sweeter than a hot brew (hot coffee). This I did not know. I thought cold brews would taste more bitter than a normal hot coffee. Since there is a lower extraction rate when cold water is used, as compared to using hot water, it produces a sweeter taste. Adding milk to a cold brew would compliment the sweetness well.

 

Also, cold brews have higher levels of caffeine as compared to hot coffee. So, if you know you are about to have a long day in the next week or so, remember to prepare your cold brew a day before. A cold brew can take from three to about 24 hours!

There are also a handful of health benefits that come from cold brews. It can boost your metabolism and help you burn more calories at rest. For those that are prone to stomach irritations, since cold brew is less acidic than hot coffee, cold brew can help you ease any irritation that you might face. Some say that cold brew may help you live longer… but I’m not sure how much of that I should believe. The reason behind this theory, is that since coffee is high in antioxidants, it can prevent cell damage that leads to chronic illnesses. Oh wells.
