You may have noticed these terms ‘green tea’ and ‘matcha’ getting increasingly popular these days as they can be found in supermarkets as tea bags, powders, and even bread spreads! Take a walk down a mall and you can also find matcha latte or bubble tea. However, did you know that there are many significant differences between green tea and matcha?
Before we get down to business, let me just clear the air in case you’re wondering about this. Yes, green tea and matcha are actually from the same plant called Camellia Sinensis. Now that we’ve got that basis clear, let’s start, shall we?

- Green tea leaves usually come in the form of tea bags, while matcha comes in powdered form. This makes matcha more concentrated as while you’re steeping green tea leaves in hot water, you’re not benefiting fully from the nutrients in the leaves whereas matcha powder is essentially grinding green tea leaves and drinking them whole!
- Green tea undergoes a longer and tougher process during production where it has to be left in the sun to be dried, rolled and curled, resulting in a process called The CTC (Cut, Tear and Curl) Method. Matcha, on the other hand, is kept under covers to increase the level of chlorophyll and amino acids in their leaves. Do note that only the finest and best quality of green tea leaves are used to make matcha powder and are always harvested by hand. Its stems and veins are removed from their leaves, then stone-ground (a method of grinding between pairs of stones) to the matcha powder you’re familiar with.
- If you’re a tea lover like me, you probably know how to appreciate the taste of both green tea and matcha as they both have slightly grassy undertones, a taste that may not be a cup of tea (pun intended) for some. However, the taste of matcha is richer and buttery, and the texture of its powder is fine, velvety and smooth while the taste of green tea is more bitter.
- The benefits of consuming matcha are also more significant than green tea. Matcha has been found to have 10 times more nutritional value than green tea and up to 137 times more antioxidants! It also has more fat-burning capabilities, a good source for preventing certain types of cancers and due to its higher level of caffeine it provides increased mental stimulation and clarity for the mind.
Now that you’re aware of the difference between green tea and matcha, I hope that this clarifies your suspicion whenever you see the most significant difference between green tea and matcha- their price.
