Bubble Tea. An Asian’s favourite drink. If you live in Singapore, you know that we are crazy for our beloved dessert. For some, it’s a must have every week, and for others, a daily necessity. And with more new bubble tea brands entering the market and popping up at almost every corner of each neighbourhood, it is irresistible. So yes, I guess you can say that majority have caught the Bubble Tea Fever, I am no exception (been “sick” for about 6 years now).
The crown jewel of bubble tea, the tapioca pearls. It gives the drink the extra chew, bringing the bubble tea experience to a whole new level. But, we all know pearls are unhealthy, but do we know why? Tapioca pearls have no nutritional value but they are high in calories, making them empty calories. A regular cup of bubble tea with full sugar has a sugar content of approximately 8 teaspoons of sugar.
There’s one mystery that has yet to be solved… why is everyone still consuming this dessert so excessively when we KNOW that it is unhealthy? It has become an addiction. But hey, I’m here to solve that, or rather, give suggestions to make this dessert healthier!
So here are 4 healthier ways to enjoy bubble tea:
1. Honey

A healthier alternative to sugar would be honey. Honey is a natural sugar that is high in antioxidant. Antioxidants helps to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. It lowers your blood pressure and cholesterol as well! Add honey instead of sugar to your milk tea and you get honey milk tea!
2. Soy Milk or Almond Milk

Using Soy milk or Almond milk instead of full cream milk can make your bubble tea much healthier! Soy milk and almond Milk contains as much protein as milk but have a lower calorie count. Soy milk is low in cholesterol and can improve cardiovascular health! Almond milk is low in calories and sugar, and high in calcium, vitamin E and D.
3. Use Fruit Juices

Adding fruit juices to your bubble tea can make all the difference! Most fruits are low in fat and calories, and most importantly, they are rich in nutrients! Add fruits to your tea to make a fruit tea. My favourite would be passion fruit green tea. Just scrape the insides of the passion fruit into your green tea, and that would be one of the most refreshing drinks you would ever have!
4. Change Your Orders!

I know giving up your favourite drink from your favourite bubble tea brand can be hard. And I’m sure that you have your own customised orders that make up the perfect bubble tea for each of you. But hear me out, start lowering the sugar content gradually on your bubble tea and soon enough, you will end up with zero percent, and find the drink still as good!
And instead of having tapioca pearls, swap it out once in a while for healthier options like white pearls or Ai-Yu jelly!
