How Many Times Should You Chew on Your Food?

How Many Times Should You Chew on Your Food?

When we are eating, we often focus on the taste of the food instead of the number of times that we should chew on the food. This is because many people believe that digestions start in the stomach and intestines, which is not true. The digestive process begins in your mouth, including the chewing process. Chewing your food properly plays an important role in digestion as it helps to break down the food into smaller pieces which helps the body to extract the greatest possible amount of nutrients from the food you eat. This brings us to today's topic, how many times should you chew on your food?

According to experts, the number of times that you should on your food is estimated to be 32 times before swallowing. For food that has a softer texture or water-based foods, it usually takes fewer chews as compared to solid foods. The main goal of chewing is to break down the food and make it lose its texture for easy digestion. For example, foods that are harder to chew like steaks and nuts take about 40 chews per mouthful. While foods that are softer like watermelon takes lesser chews, about 10-15 chews.

Chewing your food properly plays a crucial role in your digestion as well as your overall health. People who don't chew their food or swallow their food well might develop digestive problems and have a risk of choking, aspiration, malnutrition, and dehydration. According to studies, by chewing on your food more before swallowing can help to increase the sensation of fullness. This can help to reduce your overall calorie intake as you would not feel as hungry as quickly.

In conclusion, chewing your food properly is important as it plays a major role in your digestive and overall health. By chewing too quickly or too little, can affect the amount of nutrients that are absorbed into your body. Therefore, you should always chew at a comfortable pace to ensure that your body reaps the full benefits of the food that you consume.
