Is Microwaving Food Really Bad for Us?
Do you always hear this “Don’t keep reheating your food with a microwave! It’s bad for you!” phrase?
Well, I certainly do, especially when I decided to start bringing my home-cooked lunch to the office. So, it makes me wonder if it is bad for us or is it just another thing that people say because they heard it from somewhere.
When used correctly, there is nothing to worry about the radiation from your microwave according to World Health Organisation (WHO).
In general, there is nothing too concerning about microwave radiation. However, there are risks when heating food in a plastic container.
Heating Food in Plastic Containers
Nonetheless, the best way to minimize the risk is to use microwave-safe materials instead of plastic, such as ceramic. If you do use plastic, remember to avoid any that have lost its shape, old, used plastic as they are more likely to leach chemicals.
Radiation
The radiation produced by the microwaves is also completely harmless to us as they use low-frequency electromagnetic radiation, just like your lightbulb and radios.
Nutrient Loss
Every food differs from one to another. Some may do better in the microwave, while others may not be. The time, temperature and the amount of water used when you heat your food in the microwave can contribute to the differences as well. And in the case of a microwave, some vegetables fared better in the microwave than being boiled.
A moderate heat might be a useful tool in improving health properties of some vegetables!
