Om Nom Taste of Thai review – Dig into a Feast this Hungry Ghost Festival!

The time of the year to honour our ancestors and late relatives has come – yes, the 7th Lunar month when Hungry Ghost Festival would be celebrated. Many of us probably spend it at home with our family, digging into familiar Chinese dishes. In lieu of the Hungry Ghost Festival coming, Om Nom Taste of Thai sent us their Prayer Treasure mini buffet set to try out, and here are our thoughts!

Roasted Duck

As all meat lovers know, a great roasted duck has crispy skin and super juicy meat – making a heavenly combination as everyone feasts on the spread of delectable food together. Om Nom Taste of Thai did just that with their Roasted Duck, and props to them for delivering what we’d expect of a roasted duck taste-wise, even after it’s been sat out for 2 hours. We were pleasantly surprised to bite into the tender and juicy meat, at first sceptical that it would’ve been dry or tough after being delivered to us.

Roasted Chicken

A timeless classic, the Roasted Chicken is a straightforward and simple dish that we all enjoy from time to time. With a gleaming, crisp skin and thoroughly cooked fresh succulent meat, we devoured the Roasted Chicken in a matter of minutes! I appreciate how it had just the right amount of oil used, where it’s not dry, yet juicy enough to savour.

Roasted Crispy Pork

Tender with a layer of thick, crispy skin, this Roasted Crispy Pork consists of the perfect meat to fat ratio, which will keep you coming back for more throughout your meal! You can also hear the satisfying crackling of the crispy skin when you cut through it, a contrast in texture to the pillowy meat underneath. The decadent layer of fat atop the succulent meat was the cherry on top!

Deep Fried Whole Fish

With a tempura-like, golden exterior, the Deep Fried Whole Fish was battered lightly with soft and delicate flesh underneath. Om Nom Taste of Thai was generous with their portion and we gobbled it up quickly! The flaky, buttery flesh was tasty, and we loved how the batter wasn’t overpowering in taste. I also appreciate how the fish was skilfully sliced so that everyone can dig into it conveniently.

Crabmeat Fried Rice

The Crab Meat Fried Rice, although looking like any other fried rice on the outside, had me coming back for seconds and even thirds! When the lid was first taken off, its fragrance wafted my senses and I already knew I would enjoy this one. It had the right amount of savouriness that didn’t make me feel “jelak” even after my second serving! A classic Thai dish, Om Nom Taste of Thai didn’t hold back on the amount of crab meat used either.
I would say it’s a better version of your average fried rice, and you won’t go wrong with ordering this as one of your mains!

Fried Bee Hoon

Springy in texture and yet retaining just enough moisture, the Fried Bee Hoon is also a common choice of main dish. I could taste a hint of ‘wok hei’ in every bite and I was delighted to find that the bee hoon wasn’t too soft or oily. That was a plus point in my books and similar to the rice, I came back for seconds! The beansprouts and thinly sliced carrots added a mild sweetness to the overall taste as well.
Taste rating: 5/5
Red Ruby with Pineapple

Last but not least, we scooped ourselves some Red Ruby with Pineapple to complete the savoury meal. The Red Ruby was jelly-soft with a crunchy interior and paired well with the tangy pineapple bits – did I also mention how generous the portion was? The fresh coconut milk tied the dish together with its creaminess and distinct coconut taste, which personally, is my favourite part of the dessert. 😊

Additional Side Dishes

You may also wish to consider ordering additional side dishes if you’re looking for more finger food! Om Nom Taste of Thai sent us some of their add-ons, such as the Pandan Chicken, Stuffed Chicken Wing, Prawn cake and Fish cake.

A little different than your average fish cake, the taste of this golden-brown fish cake reminded me of Otak-otak, but a firmer and less delicate version. With a mild spiciness to it, this savoury fish cake tasted really good with the Fried Bee Hoon.

Another side dish to note was the stuffed chicken wings, where ingredients like ground meat and vermicelli was used to stuff the wings. Robust in flavour, this was actually the first time I tried a Thai stuffed chicken wing, and I wasn’t disappointed! The ground meat was soft, and the vermicelli introduced different textures in these wings.
