Mushroom fried rice makes a satisfying vegetarian main. Based on its appearance, it may look simple and dull, but the taste sure speaks otherwise. I’d say the seasonings had been thoroughly mixed through every grain of rice. When it comes to fried rice, I’m sure the key elements most of us would look at would probably be its flavour and wok hei. I’m sure many Singaporeans would agree with me that the ‘breath of the wok’ plays a fairly important role in Chinese dishes. And in this fried rice, we could definitely taste the flavour imparted by the wok.
This was a flavourful dish with an evident “dried shrimp” taste with a subtle mushroom essence. There wasn’t too much going on in this dish, so I thought it served great as an accompanying dish to the other dishes.

Black Sauce Fried Kway Teow

How can one ever resist this scrumptious old school dish commonly seen at hawker centres? A national favourite of Singaporeans – a popular noodle dish with a sweet, smoky flavour. Each strand of Kway Teow smooth and evenly coated with black sauce, then hits you with a little bit of wok hei. I love my fried kway teow in black sauce, but I’m also one who contemplates over having white kway teow for the little peppery kick in it. This dish was a blend of both the black and white fried kway teow – sweet with a tiny bit of spice. It’s a good plate of kway teow, but it would’ve been way tastier if it was a tad bit spicier!

Curry Chicken with Potato

A typical dish you would see on almost every buffet table, or even in a mini buffet menu. Curry Chicken will always bring everyone together. Tender pieces of chicken drumsticks cooked in luscious curry, all I needed was a plate of rice or some white bread for the perfect pairing of this dish. Nevertheless, this full-flavoured curry definitely saved and compensated the entire meal when I drizzled it over the mild-tasting veggies (which I’ll speak of later). This curry was slightly on the sweeter side, and as one who prefers savoury over sweet food, this caught me a little off-guard. However, many of my colleagues went for several helpings of it so I guess this would be a dish many would enjoy too.

Thai Style Fried Fish Fillet with Young Mango

When I first saw this dish, I thought it would be one for those with acquired taste buds. However, after tasking it, I felt it was a well-thought-out dish, with a proportionate mix of sweetness and tanginess. The fish fillets were crispy on the outside, tender and delicate on the inside. I’m not a huge fan of Thai-styled dishes but this was surprisingly quite palatable for me. Each piece was bite-sized, so the flavours were well-penetrated into them! I have to say though; I was slightly disappointed with the dish because there wasn’t an obvious young mango taste to it. This dish would’ve gotten a better rating from me had there been more mangoes added since this dish was supposed to be “Thai Style Fried Fish Fillet w/ Young Mango”.

Mixed Vegetable Deluxe

This was a basic, light dish to pair with the other heavy and full-flavoured meats and mains. You can never go wrong with this simple side. An expected crunch from these fresh veggies that would go well alongside the soft and tender textures of the other dishes! If there was one comment I would make about this dish; it was a little too bland for my liking. No complaints though; you would be able to taste the natural sweetness and juiciness of how fresh they are!

Claypot Style Beancurd

Claypot dishes work well because the food inside doesn’t lose as much moisture since it is constantly surrounded by steam which makes it such a delightful dish to have for many. True enough; the veggies were soft yet still had a crunchy bite to it. We all know beancurd is pretty tasteless (apart from the mild “beany” taste), yet this super bland initial taste is probably what makes beancurd so great. It doesn’t have a strong flavour on its own, so it easily absorbs any flavour! And it surely soaked up all the goodness from the savoury gravy in this dish!

Fish Finger with Cheese & Steamed Siew Mai

A great starter before you start the ball rolling and dig into the other hearty dishes. The Siew Mai was visibly dry, and the skin was a tad bit hard, I reckon it would’ve been better if we had it straight after it was served to us. I have to admit I was a little gutted as I was looking forward to biting into carrots or water chestnuts in what typical Siew Mai would have. It still had a meaty bite to it and it was savoury so I figure it could still be a small snack to stimulate one’s appetite!
I think you don’t usually find fish fingers with cheese as finger food on typical buffet catering menus so I was pretty happy to find them in the menu sent by Rilassi! I thought a cheese sauce would be given on the side to dip the fish fingers in but what made the “cheese” element in this appetizer was the cheese breading that was coated around the fish fingers. Nothing too “jelak” and surfeiting, suitable as a light appetizer!

Assorted Pastries

To end it all off, you get to choose among brownies, cream puffs and chocolate éclairs! Desserts are essential to end off a heavy meal – no matter how good your main course is, it would never be completed without a good dessert! The brownie was dense and fudgy, it had a slight melt-in-your-mouth texture. However, I really wished the chocolate flavour here was more intense. The cream puffs and chocolate eclairs also had generous cream-filling inside, would’ve made a great end to your meal!
