Shi Fu Ge review – Scrumptious Mini Buffet for Everyone

You know that feeling you get when you step into a buffet and see a wide spread of mouth-watering food that makes you want to grab everything in sight? Shi Fu Ge gave me that exact same feeling with the mini buffet they’ve cooked up for us. This time, we got the opportunity to experience what it’s like behind-the-scenes of preparing the yummy dishes and needless to say, we were famished by the time the food was prepared!

At $12.90 per pax, here are the dishes for the 9-course mini buffet Shi Fu Ge kindly prepared for us:

  • Mee Goreng
  • Cereal Prawns
  • Mongolian Pork Ribs
  • Curry Chicken
  • Luo Han Vegetable
  • Golden Sand Fish Fillet
  • 'Cai Poh' Beancurd
  • Mix Finger Food
  • Longan Sea Coconut

Read on for my thoughts on these yummy dishes!

Mee Goreng

A classic Chinese dish that is also one of my favourite main dishes, Shi Fu Ge’s Mee Goreng is a must-order from them! I was surprised when I tasted the tangy spiciness of this Mee Goreng, where normally the spiciness level of this dish sold elsewhere is mildly spicy. I have to say though, the spicy kick gave the dish an extra ‘oomph’ and being a fan of spicy food, this was really tasty! There were also shrimps, sotong, egg and beansprouts, making this a plate bursting with flavour and rich in texture.

Cereal Prawns

Fresh, succulent prawns deep fried to perfection, then coated with a generous layer of cereal – that’s how Cereal Prawns should always be. Shi Fu Ge didn’t disappoint with this dish, the natural juicy sweetness of the prawns could be tasted in every bite and the cereal was fragrant. I appreciated that the prawns were not overcooked as well, which won over me instantly. An absolutely gratifying dish, this is one that has to be in your next order!

Mongolian Pork Ribs

Tender and so addictive, the Mongolian Pork Ribs was a delectable plate for pork lovers alike. The use of curry leaves reminded me of typical ‘Tze Char’ style dishes such as salted egg chicken or butter prawns, which greatly contributed to the aroma of this dish.

Taste-wise, the pork ribs were not overly doused with the sweet Mongolian sauce, yet when you put it in your mouth the taste is evident enough without being “jelak”. This dish isn’t one that I eat often whenever I have Tze Char food for a meal, yet I would choose to order this again if I could because it’s just so tasty!

Curry Chicken

When I saw Curry Chicken in the menu, I knew I had to try it! A popular favourite amongst people regardless of age, the curry was creamy, smooth and flavoursome. You won’t go wrong with this dish, the chicken was cooked and left to simmer for quite some time in order to soak up the piquant taste of the curry. To my delight, it was so thoroughly cooked that the chicken meat was fall-off-the-bone tender!

Yet, what set this curry out from other dishes, was the potatoes used. The potatoes were roasted until it was soft inside before being added to the curry and had an almost smoky aroma to it even when it has been cooked with the curry. I really enjoyed it and was so happy that Shi Fu Ge included an unsparing amount of potatoes in this dish!

Luo Han Vegetable

With the savoury meat dishes all around, it might be easy to forget to eat your greens! The Luo Han Vegetable is a simple yet necessary dish to balance out your palate. Consisting of different vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, mushroom and carrots, as well as a thick, savoury gravy, this dish had a great bite to it. Need I say more?

Taste rating: 4/5

Golden Sand Fish Fillet

This Golden Sand Fish Fillet was one of my favourites! The fish fillets itself were tender and soft, coated with this floss-like seasoning that was mildly sweet. The batter used for the fish fillets itself was also scrumptious, especially when it’s crispy hot from being deep fried. This dish is unique to Shi Fu Ge and in my opinion, worth the try as well! The fish fillets and seasoning used worked in harmony to create this enjoyable dish.

'Cai Poh' Beancurd

Did you know that Cai Poh refers to preserved radish bits? The pairing of deep fried preserved radish bits as well as crispy-on-the-outside yet silky smooth-on-the-inside tofu is a match made in heaven! The Cai Poh was deep fried for a few seconds before being added to the tofu, which helped to release its naturally sweet aroma. The salty flavour of the gravy and the crispy and sweet flavour of the Cai Poh was mouth-watering together!

Mix Finger Food

For every buffet, you’ll need something smaller to whet your appetite. We chose to have the Mix Finger Food which included a medley of fried Sotong balls, wanton and samosa. Although on a sinful note, this straightforward and effortless dish was enjoyable and easy for me to get carried away while snacking on it! Rest assured that everyone would enjoy this simple little plethora of deep fried bites.

Taste rating: 4/5

Longan Sea Coconut

One of my personal favourite fruits, Longan is a popular Asian fruit that is versatile to be used in so many desserts. The sweet, juicy pulp of Longan and the soft flesh of sea coconut brought together in this Longan Sea Coconut was so pleasing to chew on after a hearty meal and I couldn’t be more satisfied! This dessert was refreshing and not too sweet either, which is a plus point. You won’t be disappointed with this sweet treat!
