Proper confinement meals are extremely important as a woman's body after labour is at its most vulnerable state. In particular, the Chinese believe that consuming the right food at the right time will help nourish the body to ensure speedy post-natal recovery. Luckily at FoodLine, we have our confinement caterer, Tian Wei Signature here at your service!

We were provided with different menus for 3 consecutive days, with the menus for each day stated clearly. Thoughtfully, Tian Wei Signature sent over soups that are suitable for everyone, which contains lesser herbs that may be too 'heaty' for us.

Day 1

Broccoli With Braised Shiitake Mushroom 西兰花炖花菇

Stewed Pork With Galangal And Lemongrass 香茅南姜炖肉

Five Grain Rice 五谷饭

Green Papaya Fish Soup 青木瓜鱼汤

Overall, we enjoyed the dishes prepared for the day! The greens were fresh and crunchy. The stewed pork was braised well, the potatoes and black fungus were a good addition to the dish. The meat was also succulent and juicy,  while the sauce was not too salty and was seasoned perfectly. Both Lemongrass and Galangal were added to the dish. Lemongrass is said to relieve cold symptoms from the body, combat fatigue and anxiety. Galangal was also included as it has anti-inflammatory properties, and can help relieve discomfort caused by inflammation of the abdomen and improve blood circulation.

The rice was on a slightly dry end and can be eaten with the sauce from the stew or soup. A plus point the rice is made from a healthy mix of 4 other types of rice were included -  sorghum bicolour rice (高粱), Brown rice (糙米), Buckwheat (荞麦), Wheat (小麦).

The Green Papaya soup was made with a variety of herbs that are nutritious and helps to detoxify, increase breast milk, reduce diuresis (increased or excessive urination) and swelling. The fish was fried before it was boiled, so as to remove the distinct fish taste and smell as well as to further enhance the flavour of the soup.

Day 2

Seared salmon 香煎三文鱼

Stir Fried Sweet Pea With Kidney And Liver with D.O.M 法国郎酒甜豆炒腰子猪肝

Red Fermented Wine Chicken 红糟鸡

Barley Millet Rice 薏米小米饭

Polygonum Multiflorum Black Chicken Soup 何首乌乌鸡汤

Red Bean Puree With Orange Peel Dessert  陈皮红豆沙

The dishes served on Thursday were as impressive as the ones delivered on Wednesday. Salmon, a fish not commonly seen in confinement food, was added due to its nutritional value. Salmon is said to be able to improve cardiovascular health, enhance tissue development, and boost overall ocular well-being. The salmon was not overcooked and well seared on both sides. When paired with the creamy sauce, it turned out to be a very delicious combination. The cream sauce was not too thick and complemented the salmon well.

On the other hand, the sweet pea went well with the liver and kidney combination. As someone who is not particularly fond of animal innards, I'm pleasantly surprised with how the Stir Fried Sweet Pea With Kidney And Liver with D.O.M tasted. The kidney and liver did not taste "fishy" and according to an offal lover in our office, were stir fried just right. Innards can taste rubbery and hard if overdone but these were definitely not!

The fermented wine chicken is also delectable, as the meat was firm and not too dry. Red fermented rice wine was used to cook the chicken. Red fermented rice wine is known to be good for metabolism, lowering cholesterol level as well. The rice for the day was barley millet rice. It paired well with the chicken and greens.

The soup of the day was Polygonum Multiflorum Black Chicken Soup. This soup is exceptionally effective for mothers who are anemic as Polygonum Multiflorum is good for nourishing blood, restoring hair colour and preventing ageing effects. The Red Bean Puree with Orange Peel was also thick and filled with red beans. Orange Peel also contains plenty of vitamins and minerals that are good for the body.

Day 3

Stir Fried Pork Liver With White Beehoon And Kailan 猪肝芥兰米粉

Sweet And Sour Fish Slices  酸甜鱼片

Goma-ae Grilled Chicken With Spinach 日式芝麻鸡搭配菠菜

Heart Calming Soup 安神汤

Ginger Mushroom Kombu Soup 三菌汤

Oh no, we are down to the last day! Today's menu was fulfilling and delicious. The Stir Fried Beehoon was my favourite, and if eaten on it's own can be quite filling for one person! The beehoon was moist, while the vegetables were crunchy, fresh and bright green. Kailan was chosen as it is rich in iron and is beneficial to the veins and bones. Moreover, Pig Liver is also beneficial for mothers suffering from anemia after childbirth. It is reputed to have high iron content and aids in blood formation.

The next dish - Sweet and Sour Fish is surprisingly good. The fish fillet was not dry and when paired with the sauce tasted really good. Even though I've never been a big fan of sweet and sour dishes, this one was yummy!

Not forgetting the spinach and grilled chicken bathing in the sesame sauce, the spinach was done well and the chicken was grilled, which made the dish much healthier. Spinach is also an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, plus it is also low in calories.

Alongside the dishes, we also received two soups of the day - Ginger Mushroom Kombu Soup and Heart Calming Soup. Ginger is commonly eaten as it can reduce muscle aches, soreness and reduce nausea. It is filled with anti-inflammatory properties which helps to boost the immune system and commonly used to expel wind from the body.  The Heart Calming Soup was boiled to just the right consistency, and the herbs in the soup did not overpower the fresh ingredients used. Traditionally, drinking the Heart Calming Soup can soothe nerves and cure insomnia. Calrose Rice was served with the dishes.

1 Litre of Red Date Tea (2 cups) accompanied the meals daily. It wasn’t overly sweet which is a plus, and there were longan and red date pieces in it. Longan is extremely beneficial to the heart and kidneys. Paired with red dates, which helps in nourishing the blood, this drink is brewed to revitalize the body and ensure wellness.

All in all we had a great experience with Tian Wei Signature, their meals were both nutritious and tasted good. A lot of effort and thought was put into making each dish.
