Were there times where you felt a strong craving for sugar, salt, or caffeine? Well, it's normal. Many people deal with junk food cravings on a frequent basis, some even daily. For us to stop eating junk food, we need to understand why they are so addictive for us. Many junk foods are created with a "bliss point" which provide the consumers with ultimate pleasure as the food is not too salty, sweet, or fatty. This makes it difficult for the brain to resist its temptation as it is similar to cocaine and other drug addiction. While it's impossible to suppress your craving completely, here are some tips to help you control them!
Plan in advance

One of the simplest ways to tackle your cravings is to plan your meals ahead of time. If you have already prepared your healthy meal before coming to work, you are less likely to order french fries, grab leftover food in the office, or eat snacks that are offered by your colleague. This helps you to reduce your "food cue reactivity" which is a term used by researchers to describe your susceptibility to be influenced by external sources.
Selection of ingredients

When purchasing ingredients from the grocery store, you should look for ingredients in the dairy, meat, and fish sections. This is where you’ll find real foods, rather than highly processed food products. If there are a few ingredients that you can't pronounce on the label, the food is likely to be highly processed. For example, some foods that are highly processed includes coke, flavoured potato chips, and flavoured candy bar with a long ingredient list. By only buying whole foods products, you can benefit from the nutrients that they provide, and they also help to diminish the craving for foods that are highly processed.
Eat healthy fats

There is a common misconception that eating fats make you fat. The truth is your body needs fat! However, there are different types of fat, some of which you should avoid are trans fats and limit saturated fats. The type of fats you should incorporate into your diet are heart-healthy fats that are often obtained by eating nuts and avocado. Heart-healthy fats help you to feel full and reduces cravings for other foods.
In conclusion, it's difficult to suppress your cravings completely, but there are methods to help you control it! For a start, it's always a good idea to prepare your meal as you know what goes into it and you will not find the need to buy snacks when you are hungry. With enough patience and time, you will be able to incorporate healthy foods into your diet rather than junk foods!
