As some of you might already know, Kopi Luwak is the world’s most expensive coffee. The reason why it is so expensive is due to the special and uncommon method of producing this coffee. This special producing method also causes a short supply, thus pushing up the price of the Kopi Luwak further. Together with the high demand from the customers, this just drives up prices drastically.
What is so special about the production of this coffee is that the coffee beans are being digested by an Indonesian cat-like animal called then palm civet or also civet cat. Therefore, some of you might have also heard of Kopi Luwak being called cat poop coffee or civet cat coffee.
The civet cats will normally choose the most ripped coffee cherries to consume. During the digestion process, the coffee cherries and pulp are being removed but the coffee beans are not digested. This process also can cause a special fermentation which gives the coffee beans a new flavour. After the coffee beans are out in the feces, they are being washed, dried and roasted ready to be brewed
How Much Does It Cost?
The price of Kopi Luwak varies in different coffee shops, a cup of Kopi Luwak cost about $50 to $100 while normal coffee costs $2 to $5. Price of a 100g packet of Kopi Luwak coffee beans cost about $200 to $600. The production for Kopi Luwak is low at 500 to 1000kg per year while Brazilian coffee beans can produce up to 1.8 mio tons which is why Kopi Luwak is expensive.
