YOLO review – We make Your Favourites Healthier!

Many of us have the mindset that healthy food = tasteless and boring food. We couldn’t be more wrong on this! YOLO Food proved to us that taking care of your diet doesn’t necessarily have to mean giving up on all the delicious food that we love. In fact, we can still eat what we like, with these colourful bowls made of ingredients that are beneficial to our bodies.

[/embed]An Asian food-focused, healthy take-away concept, you can even order these nutritious, yet yummy bowls for your corporate events or parties! Here are the food items we tried out:

Cauliflower “Fried Rice” w/ Chicken & Veggies

Consisting of baked cauliflower rice, herb chicken, baked spinach & onion eggs and purple cabbage, this bowl stood out to me immediately at first glance because of how colourful it was! I loved how the cuts of chicken slices were so tender, as well as retaining just enough moisture so it wasn’t dry – definitely a sous vide chicken. I also liked how rice was substituted for cauliflower rice – meaning no carbs and more nutrients! It was my first time trying cauliflower rice, and it tastes mildly sweeter than rice, pairing well with the chicken.
Additionally, the baked spinach & onion eggs were so soft to bite into – they reminded me of tamago (Japanese-style egg) because of its texture. It accompanied the other ingredients pretty well while not overshadowing the chicken slices!

Thai Tofu w/ Kailan, Lentils & Quinoa salad

This Thai Tofu with Kailan, Lentils & Quinoa salad was super tasty, and a great vegetarian option you might consider for your vegetarian guests. If you love Thai food, this is perfect for you! With soft yet firm tofu laying on a bed of pillowy quinoa and topped off with pomegranate bits – you’ll love this fresh take on salad.
Not to mention, I’m a huge fan of anything with quinoa so the fact that quinoa was used was easily a plus point for me. Drizzle the sauce all over the tofu and dig in!

Basil Minced Chicken w/ Brown Rice & Egg

The Basil Minced Chicken with Brown Rice & Egg is a healthier alternative to the Thai dish many of us are familiar with. Where normally we would be looking at an oilier, savoury dish, this bowl felt “clean” while not compromising on that savoury flavour of Basil Minced Chicken! In this bowl, brown rice is used in place of the usual steamed white rice, and I much preferred it over our usual steamed white rice. The short-grain rice itself were fluffy and soaked up the flavours from the Basil Minced Chicken very well.
Completing this bowl is the Japanese-style soft boiled eggs, similar to those you might find when eating ramen! The halved eggs tied the meal together and we enjoyed every bit of this bowl.

Snacks

We also tried out some of the healthy snacks offered by YOLO Food. From the left, we tried out the Tofu Chocolate Brownie, Low Fat Cheesecake, Banana Bread and Walnut Carrot Cake.
Before I delve into each snack, my favourite was the banana bread! It was moist and soft to bite into, with a strong, sweet banana flavour to accompany. It felt like heaven on my taste buds! Not to mention, YOLO’s Banana bread are gluten free!
We also really enjoyed the Walnut Carrot Cake, which had a fluffy yet crumbly texture. The bits of walnuts added a nice crunch that complemented well with the cake and overall, the taste wasn’t too sweet – which makes it easy to finish a whole piece without getting “jelak”. As for the Tofu Chocolate Brownie, it had a delicate texture to it with the right amount of chocolate taste as well. It almost feels as if it’s going to melt in your mouth!
Last but not least, you could taste the tangy cheese taste from the Low Fat Cheesecake even though it is lower in fat. I’d say that all these snacks didn’t give me the “heavy” feeling you might get when you eat regular desserts. These are not only healthier, but guilt-free as well!
