3 Home Remedies to Treat Cough

3 Home Remedies to Treat Cough

Coughing is perfectly normal as it is a reflex action to clear your airways of mucus and irritants such as dust or smoke. It's a rare sign of anything serious. A "dry cough" is tickly and doesn't produce any phlegm while chesty cough produces phlegm to help clear your airways. Here are a few natural remedies to treat or improve cough without the need of medications.

Hot Honey Lemon Drink

Honey is a famous ingredient that treats sore throat. According to studies, it has been proven that honey helps to relieve cough more effectively than medicine over the counter. All you have to do is to add 2 tablespoon of honey and a slice or two of lemons into a warm cup of water. Your hot honey lemon drink is done!

Salt and Water Gargle

This remedy might seem simple but it is really effective. Gargling salt water can help to soothe a scratchy throat that causes you to cough. Mixing 1/2 teaspoon of salt with 8 ounces of warm water can help to relieve irritation.

Steam

Take a hot shower or bath and allow the bathroom to fill with steam. Stay in this steam for a few minutes until symptoms subside and drink a glass of water afterward to cool down and prevent dehydration. What the steam does is that it relieves the phlegm and improves airflow of your congested nasal passages.
