3 Tips for a Healthy and Delicious Smoothie

With Singapore's humid weather, we often find ourselves perspiring and searching for a cold beverage in the refrigerator. Instead of reaching out to a can of sweet drink, why not make yourself a tasty and refreshing smoothie? Smoothies are a great way to incorporate healthy ingredients into your diet as you are blending a variety of fruits and vegetables that are packed with vitamins. Smoothies are better than juices as you’re consuming the ingredients as a whole, rather than extracting only the juices from them. By drinking them whole, you'll get a full dose of heart-healthy fiber and not waste any ingredients that could have additional benefits to your health.
Another advantage of making smoothies is that you can choose the type of nutrients you want for your body. One of the best ways of making a smoothie is to make a balanced blend of protein, fat, and carb. This can make them an alternative to your meals as well. Let's get into the 3 tips to make a healthy and delicious smoothie!
Restrict the amount of added sweeteners

If you're new to making a smoothie, you might find yourself reaching out to a bottle of maple syrup or honey to sweeten the drink. This is an ineffective way of making your smoothie healthier as it only supplies additional sugar. Instead, try incorporating certain fruits that can act as natural sweeteners with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial phytonutrients. Here are some fruits with natural sweeteners that you can incorporate to your smoothie: bananas, pineapple, oranges, and mango.
Add the vegetables

With the fruits added into the blend, it's now time to add some vegetables. Like fruits, vegetables can help to provide additional vitamins and minerals. They also help to balance the sweetness of the smoothie as they have a slight earthly and bitter taste. Some of my personal favourites include carrots, beets, or canned pureed pumpkin.
Protein

Protein is an important nutrient that you would not want to miss if you're trying to replace your breakfast with a smoothie. Protein helps to make your smoothie more substantial and makes you feel full as it reduces the level of hunger hormones in your body called ghrelin. Some healthy protein options that you can add are plain low-fat yogurt, skim or 1% milk, soy milk, and silken tofu.
In conclusion, if you want to have a healthy diet, simple things like a smoothie can help you! You do not need hours of prep and cooking time to make a healthy meal, but instead, you can just spend a couple of minutes and make yourself a healthy smoothie. If you're looking to start living a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, do give some of these tips a try!
