Hey, are you always hungry at work? I’m pretty sure you’ve experienced this before. Well… You are not alone, because I am always feeling hungry at work. Sometimes, I even feel like I’m in a state of “hallucination” where the snacks in the pantry are all calling out for me to have them. “Eat me! Eat me!”
But have you ever wondered why? Is it because you are really hungry? This isn’t as simple as it sounds!
Here are a few reasons as to why you feel like gobbling up all the chips in the pantry even after your meals!

- You Had Your Meals While Distracted
We all understand the hectic lifestyle an average Singaporean faces on a daily basis. Eating while working on something may help you save some time and get some work done. However, several studies have shown that those who were distracted while eating are hungrier than those who are not. While distracted, it makes your body difficult to recognize its fullness signals! Those who engages in distracted eating had a greater desire to consume more throughout their day.
Also, I’m sure many of us are guilty of having our meals while using our mobile phones. This is also one distraction that can cause us to feel hungry throughout the day. So, practice mindfulness and cut down on your screen time while eating! Enjoy your lunch and help your body recognize your body’s fullness signals!

- You are actually just thirsty
If you don’t already know, dehydration can actually make your body believe that you need food. Before reaching for a snack, check yourself to see if you are hungry or if it is just thirst! One way to check if you’re dehydrated would be to check if your urine is in a darker color than normal.
Drinking enough water not only steers you away from unnecessary snacking habits, it also promotes various health benefits. For example, doing so keeps your brain and heart health in check, optimizes your exercise performance as well as keeping your skin and digestive system healthy!

- You Did Not Get Enough Sleep
Yes… I do understand… 24 hours is too short! Half a day spend at work and another quarter spent traveling and doing miscellaneous errands. By the time you have the chance to sit down on your soft and comfy couch, it is 12am!
However, sleep deprivation actually messes up your appetite! Lack of sleep causes your appetite-stimulating hormones level; ghrelin to be higher, and you’ll feel hungrier!
So, try to get at least 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep to keep your hunger levels in control!

- You are too stressed up!
Stress is known to increase the levels of cortisol; a hormone that promotes hunger and food cravings. If you are frequently experiencing stress, you might find yourself constantly hungry.
Studies have shown that those who were under constant stress tends to consume more than those who don’t. Reports also shows that you tend to reach out for food higher in sugar under stress.
Try to reduce your stress level by exercising or doing deep breathing exercise!
By the way… why not order in and have lunch with your colleagues?
Have a great lunch and catch up with those colleagues that you miss talking to because of the huge amount of work to do.
Not only does it cut down on your screen time, chatting with your colleagues will definitely help reduce your stress levels!
