History of the Dalgona Candy and More Yummy Desserts on FoodLine

What is Dalgona candy?
Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard of the famous Dalgona candy from squid game! Well, do you know that the candy actually has some pretty interesting history behind it?
Well, the Dalgona candy, or ppopgi in Korean, is a Korean candy that was a popular snack made from baking soda and melted sugar. It was popular among kids in the 70s and 80s, and is still eaten as a retro food. It was first created after the Korean war where during which, US Army personnel would give out sweets to the Korean children. Since the Korean parents couldn't afford such luxuries back then, they made their own version of candy called Dalgona. Due to its significance in the popular Korean drama series Squid Game, the Dalgona candy revived in popularity and is now a trending matter worldwide with many people attempting to recreate their own versions at home.
How is it made?
Dalgona candy is made by adding baking soda to melted sugar, which fluffs the combination up. When left to cool, it becomes a light and crunchy candy. Typically, before cooling, street vendors will pour the hot combination on a flat surface, pressed flat, and stamped with a patterned mold to create a shape just like the fish you see above. Eaters will then try to trim their way around the outline without breaking the picture or shape. If done so successfully, they would be considered a winner and vendors might give them another free candy.
