Katong Catering Review - Festive Sets That Are Actually Worth Your Money!
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Katong Catering has kindly sent us their Festive Set for us to review. From a humble tingkat delivery service, Katong Catering, has grown over the years to become an established and well-known caterer in Singapore. Stay till the end for some bonus dishes that you MUST ORDER for your Xmas gathering this year!
1. Christmas Cold Cuts

Nothing says Christmas more than Honey Baked Ham! The meat was tender and flavourful. The cold cuts came with a side of Berries Marmalade. Expect a refreshing and sweet flavour from the berries! I’m usually not a fan of mixing sweet and savoury foods together but I must say, the marmalade really complements the ham very well!
2. Oven Baked Garlic Prawns

The prawns are marinated with garlic chili flakes & dried parsley. They had a firm and crisp texture, which means that they are fresh! Also, they added a generous amount of garlic to the dish. However, the garlic did not overpower the natural sweetness of the prawns. Instead, it made the dish extra umami and flavourful.
3. Panko Crusted White Fish

In case you didn’t know, Panko is a variety of flaky breadcrumbs used in Japanese cuisine as a crunchy coating for fried food, such as tonkatsu. The texture of panko makes it especially wonderful for fried food because it absorbs lesser oil than breadcrumbs, keeping food crispier and crunchier! The Panko coating had a light, airy, and delicate texture. Meanwhile, the white fish is marinated with various herbs and a spread of mustard, giving it a savoury finish.
4. Chicken Yakitori

I love how the thigh was used for this dish because the thigh has a smooth, almost silken texture. It was also firm and very juicy! The meat was really marinated well as the Teriyaki sauce was able to penetrate through the meat, making each bite delectable!
5. Butter Rice

Firstly, let’s appreciate the appearance of this dish. What a gorgeous shade of yellow! The butter made the rice extremely fragrant. The rice was fluffy, buttery, and not sticky at all. I really love the olive and raisin toppings, as they added extra levels of texture to the dish. Overall, a well-executed dish!
6. Roasted Southwest Potatoes, Corn & Vegetables

The medley of vegetables was roasted really well, with the surface being golden brown and crispy. The seasonings were prominent, however that did not overpower the natural sweetness of the vegetables. Every bite was crunchy and palatable. The star would definitely be the potatoes! They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Super yummy!
7. Medley of Pastries

Mini Eclairs & Tiramisu cakes are in the medley of pastries. The eclairs were light as air yet rich and satisfying. Luckily, they were not soggy at all. The tiramisu was a rich treat that blended the bold flavours of cocoa and espresso very nicely. These pastries will be a popular choice among adults and children!
BONUS DISHES
1. Deconstructed Chicken Pot Pie

Basically, deconstructing food means dismantling the food down to its component parts. The “filling” consists of boneless chicken, soy sauce, sour cream, mushrooms, and spring onions. The chicken was perfectly cooked, maintaining its tender and sweet flavour. The puff pastry sticks were my favourite! They were buttery and flaky. Dipping them into the creamy and savoury sauce made them extra shiok to consume. To be honest, I could probably eat them plain because they were THAT good.
2. Yuzu Sesame Mousse Cake

This dessert is a light sponge sesame cake layered with yuzu infused mousse. I am personally not a big fan of yuzu, but this dessert BLEW MY MIND. It tasted amazing! I devoured more than 5 of this in one seating… The cake was airy and light. The yuzu mousse was sweet and tangy. They went perfectly with each other. I’m salivating just by reminiscing the divine flavour of this sweet treat…
