It's that time of year again — the air smells faintly of incense, makeshift altars pop up along five-foot ways, and your aunty is reminding you (again) not to whistle after dark. Welcome to the 7th Month, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival or Zhong Yuan Jie, when the gates of the underworld are said to open and spirits roam the human world for a month.

Even the most sceptical Singaporeans tend to play it safe during this period, and food is no exception. Certain dishes, drinks, and dining habits are considered inauspicious — or at least best avoided — until the festival wraps up. Here's what to know, and what you can order instead without breaking any unspoken rules.

Skip food left out as offerings

You'll spot fruits, rice, roast meats, and snacks laid out on sidewalks or at makeshift altars, often with joss sticks burning beside them. These aren't abandoned snacks — they're offerings meant for wandering spirits, so touching or eating them is considered deeply disrespectful (and more than a little unlucky).

Go easy on seafood dinners by the water

Reservoirs and pools are believed to be where restless spirits linger during the 7th Month, so late-night seafood suppers by the water's edge might not be the best idea this month. If you're craving prawns or crabs, keep the feast indoors instead.

Rethink celebratory spreads

Big joyful occasions — weddings, housewarmings, birthday blowouts — are traditionally avoided during the 7th Month, and that extends to the elaborate celebratory spreads that usually go with them. If you've got an event planned, some hosts choose to keep the menu simple and low-key until the month passes.

What to eat instead?

The good news: there's still plenty to enjoy this month, especially food with symbolic meaning. Steamed mantou and split-top buns represent humility and rising fortune, longevity noodles are a 7th Month staple for good reason, and roast duck, chicken, or pork belly are common centrepieces on the prayer table before they're shared at the family meal.

Many households have also moved away from cooking everything from scratch, opting instead for 7th Month buffet spreads that cover both the prayer offerings and the family meal in one order. It takes the guesswork out of what's appropriate, and saves you a trip to five different stores.

Tips & Things to Note When Ordering for the 7th Month

  • Book early. Peak dates (especially the 1st and 15th day of the lunar month) fill up quickly, so order 2–4 days in advance where possible.

  • Choose the right catering style. Full setup buffets are ideal for larger gatherings, while mini buffets or à la carte orders work well for smaller home prayers.

  • Wait before dining. Traditionally, offerings are left on the altar for a period of time before the meal begins.

  • Respect public offerings. Do not touch food or offerings placed at roadsides, void decks, or public spaces, as they are intended for wandering spirits.

  • Check dietary requirements. If you need halal-certified or vegetarian options, confirm availability with your caterer before ordering.

  • Review delivery terms. Compare delivery fees and minimum spend requirements, as these vary between caterers.
