Yoon’s Social Kitchen Review - Colourful Kuehs & Homely Bentos!
When I learned about the menu we will be receiving from Yoon’s Social Kitchen - kuehs and bento sets - I was excited because I love to eat png kueh and the bento sets had homely dishes in them. They sent over 4 types of kueh - png kueh, yam kueh, cikak kueh and tiam tor along with 2 bento sets - chicken curry and braised pork belly.
Aren’t you curious to find out how each dish tastes? Read on to find out about my experience with Yoon’s Social Kitchen!
Png Kueh, Yam Kueh, Cikak Kueh & Tiam Tor
Let's begin with some background knowledge about kueh. It is a glutinous rice cake that comes in bite-sized form and it can be sweet or savoury. Let’s start by identifying the various kuehs sent to us: pink png kueh; white yam kueh; green cicak kueh and red tiam tor.
First, Png Kueh. This kueh is a savoury kueh - packed with glutinous rice, fresh pork belly, mushrooms and peanuts. The kueh’s skin is not very thick so it is relatively easy to chew. The pork belly is also tender, the mushroom is soft and peanuts crunchy. When you bite into it, you can equally taste the flavours of both the kueh skin and fillings.
Next, another savoury kueh - Yam Kueh. It is packed with shredded yam, fresh pork belly and mushrooms. Again, the skin of the kueh is easy to chew, allowing me to taste the fillings well. The chewy shredded yam, tender pork belly and soft mushroom goes well together and gives off an aromatic flavour.
Savoury kuehs are normally accompanied by sweet black soy and chili sauce which tastes slightly salty. When the png kueh or yam kueh is eaten with both sauces, it therefore adds a tinge of saltiness which adds a more robust flavour to the kueh!
Moving on to the sweet kuehs, we first have Cikak Kueh. This cikak kueh has a skin made from leaves of cudweed plants and is filled with brown-sugared paste (dousha) also known as mung beans. It is not easy to get cudweed leaves in Singapore, so cikak kueh is not commonly sold by kueh stores in Singapore. Yoon’s Social Kitchen has imported theirs all the way from Thailand, which makes it an extra special kueh. The kueh smells like herb but when you bite into it, it has a slight sweetness because of the mung beans! The kueh, in general, is very soft in the mouth because it contains paste and does not have other textured fillings compared to the savoury kuehs. It tastes very healthy, unique and the flavours are not very overwhelming.
Lastly, Tiam Tor. Tiam Tor is the Teochew version of Ang Gu Kueh. The sweet glutinous rice skin and slightly sweet brown sugared mung bean (dousha) filling overall make the kueh taste sweet. Similar to cikak kueh, the paste inside makes the kueh soft to bite and chew on.

Braised Pork Belly Bento Set
This bento set consists of braised pork belly, preserved vegetables and rice. Although it may look very simple, it tastes amazing. This dish is personally the best out of everything sent as it exceeded my expectations. I am not a fan of pork and wanted to eat only a piece of pork belly, but it turned out to be so delicious I couldn’t stop going for more. The sauce complements well with the braised pork belly, and I could taste both sweet and salty flavours when biting on the tender meat. The preserved vegetables were very soft in texture and I’m not exaggerating when I say it melted in my mouth. It did not taste very salty and was just nice for my palate. Eating both the pork belly and vegetables together with the rice made it taste even better.

Curry Chicken Bento Set
This bento set consists of curry chicken, curry mixed vegetables and rice. When I ate this, it gave me a very homely feeling. The curry sauce tastes sweet and savoury at the same time and it adds a unique flavour to the chicken. I suggest eating the curry chicken, vegetables and rice together in one bite! You will not only be able to taste the strong curry aroma but crunchy vegetables and chewy rice as well.

I personally really love all dishes, but I have to give it to the braised pork belly bento set as the best for me.
Yoon’s Social Kitchen has more kuehs and bento sets to offer other than the ones we’ve mentioned above. If you’re interested in ordering from them, do check out their menu!
