Art of Dao Review - Get your vegetarian cravings fix here!

Recently, we had the opportunity to pay Art of Dao a visit. The moment we reached the store, we were greeted with warm welcomes and a refreshing home-made yuzu spritz. Before we knew it, we were served with their various mouth-watering dishes. A unique point about this shop is that they focus on creating purely vegetarian dishes with a twist in taste and appearance. The caterer places much emphasis on gathering their customer's feedback to help them tweak their dishes in a way that would cater to various taste buds and satisfy everyone's cravings. Their main sets are priced from just $4.90 a set, whereas their side dishes range from just $1.20/ item!

Sautéed Fish in Ginger Sauce

This dish was rather interesting as the vegetarian sautéed fish was made solely with beans, but tasted and had the exact consistency as to how a fish would be! At first we were slightly afraid that the ginger sauce would be too overpowering, however, it was very well balanced with just the right amount of sweetness and saltiness to it. We highly recommend that you give this dish a try!

Sautéed Yamabushitake in Ginger Sauce

Never heard of yamabushitake? Yamabushitake is an edible medicinal mushroom belonging to the tooth fungus group. The texture of the mushroom is soft and chewy and it was cooked to perfection! The ginger sauce had a good consistency, with a tinge of spice and it complemented both the mushroom and the rice really well. The capsicum pieces and sesame toppings added an extra texture to the dish. This dish was definitely one of the star dishes!

Fish Slice Bee Hoon

When we first took a sip of the soup, we were in shock as the soup was bursting with intense flavours, and it tasted exactly like the real fish soup. The soup had a good consistency - not too watery or not too milky. There was also a generous amount of ingredients such as mock fish (made from beans), carrots, lettuce and seaweed that enhanced the flavours of the dish. It also gave the dish a variety of textures. We recommend that this dish is eaten while hot!

Olive Fried Rice

The olive fried rice looked highly appetising and we could not wait to dig in! There was a generous amount of ingredients cooked with the fried rice and every mouthful was packed with flavours. The floss toppings also complemented the dish really well! The fresh carrots and fried beancurd skin added an extra crunch to the dish too.

Black Pepper Udon

The black pepper udon was another rather unique dish that we got to try. At first, we were afraid that the udon noodles would be slightly soggy after being soaked in the gravy. However, we were pleasantly surprised at how perfect the texture was. The noodles had just the right texture with a balance of springy and chewy texture. It was also very well coated with the black pepper sauce which added a hint of spice to the entire dish. If you’re afraid that the black pepper seasonings would be too overpowering, fret not, as the caterer did a very good job in balancing the flavours to have just the right amount of heat, saltiness and sweetness to the dish.

Satay

Each time we think about satay, we think about chicken, beef, mutton and pork satay. What about a vegetarian satay? This vegetarian satay is made from bean paste but has a chewy texture, exact to that of a real satay. The peanut satay sauce was fragrant and had a perfect consistency which coated the satay well. This was another of our favourite dish!

Nasi Lemak

Another one of the stars of the spread would be Art of Dao’s signature Nasi Lemak. The rice was very light and had a fragrant “coconutty” aroma to it. Instead of the usual chicken wing, fried fish and fishcakes that you would usually have in most nasi lemak dishes, the caterer has revamped this dish to be something entirely new. The sides consisted of Yamabushitake coated with home-made curry sauce. There was also otak otak(bean based), long bean, egg, peanuts and crispy beancurd skin. There was also a generous amount of homemade sambal chilli that gave the dish the extra heat it needed. This dish is highly recommended!

Mushroom & Hawaiian Pizza

If you’re a pizza lover, we highly recommend this dish for you! Art of Dao places much emphasis on the freshness of their dishes. Hence, they have handmade the pizza dough from scratch, allowing the dough to be crunchy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. There was also a generous amount of ingredient toppings for the pizzas such as vegetarian ham, pineapple, mushrooms, and more! What’s more, the base of the pizza which is a tomato paste is freshly handmade in their stores as well! Do give them a try!

Mushroom Soup

This bowl of mushroom soup is filled with total goodness! The consistency of the soup was not watery at all, in fact, it was thick and generously mixed with finely chopped mushrooms. A unique point about this dish is that it contains no garlic or onions. However, the soup was still bursting with flavours from its natural ingredients.
