1. It is an essential in Korean meals
Banchan is not just for decoration or appetizers and is considered equally important as the other main dishes. Koreans take their side dishes very seriously and won’t consider a proper meal if there is no banchan!
2. They are served along with rice and soup
When having traditional Korean meals, you will definitely be served side dishes on top of your main, which are normally rice and soup. Therefore it is said that Korean meals are often like a ‘mini-feast’.
3. They are not served in large portions
Banchan is served little by little but you can get it refilled as you eat if there is not enough.
4. The higher your status is, the more banchan there will be
In the olden times, if you have a very high status, you will be served more side dishes. Therefore kings can be served up to 100 varieties of side dishes! Can you imagine the amount of food on the table?
5. You can find kimchi in your banchan at almost every restaurant
We all know how much Koreans love their kimchi. They love it so much that there is a 99% chance you will be served kimchi at restaurants. This common banchan is made from Chinese cabbage and then fermented with either doenjang (Korean fermented soybean paste) or gochujang (Korean red chili pepper paste). With the long months, or even years of fermentation, that is what makes kimchi taste unique I would say.
