Fortune Food Review

Do you love popiah parties? I know I do! Popiah parties always bring out the kid in me, as playing (I mean, assembling) with my own food and eating them sounds like real fun to me. My family loves having popiah parties during our dinner gatherings. But like every Asian family, we need our carbs to keep ourselves full for the rest of the night and cooking seems too much of a chore when we just want to eat! No worries because Fortune Food offers 4 DIY (do-it-yourself) sets that include the Popiah, Muah Chee, Kueh Pie Ti and Laksa (yay, carbs!) set so you’ll never go hungry at your next popiah party. It is super convenient as well because you no longer need to prepare the ingredients yourself - just order them online, sit down and relax while you wait for your food to be delivered!

Every set also comes with an A1-sized poster that teaches you how to assemble your own dish and all you have to do is to follow the instructions step-by-step!
1. Popiah Set

This set includes handmade popiah skin, cooked turnip with carrot, sweet sauce, sambal chilli, minced garlic, crispy bits, grated peanuts, eggs, shredded cucumber and coriander leaves.
This ordinary-looking popiah actually did leave a good impression on me. The crispy bits and grated peanuts were so crunchy they gave the popiah more texture, which I really enjoyed while having them with the soft and juicy cooked turnip. Although the sambal chili wasn’t as spicy as I had imagined it to be, it was a good complement to the sweet sauce. I personally love coriander leaves, so having that in my popiah elevated the taste and smell of my popiah, giving it a refreshing take. The best part about any DIY sets is that you’re able to control the amount of ingredients you’re putting in so you’re free to leave out that coriander leaf you dislike! The only disappointment for me was that they did not include prawns in the list of ingredients, but since it was a DIY set, you can always prepare your own separate ingredients.
*Suitable for vegetarians if egg, garlic, coriander and chili (contains dried shrimp) is not added.

2. Kueh Pie Ti Set

This set includes handmade Kueh Pie Ti shells, cooked turnip with carrot, sweet sauce, crispy bits, grated peanuts, eggs, garlic chilli and coriander leaves.
A popular Peranakan dish, Kueh Pie Ti is proof that pastry can be savoury and delicious! The ingredients were similar to the Popiah set, but when put into the crispy shell, everything was right. The crispiness of the shell goes really well with the soft turnip, and like the Popiah, the crispy bits made sure that your Kueh Pie Ti was crunchy until the last bite!

3. Laksa Set

This set includes Fortune laksa gravy, bee hoon noodles, sliced fish cake, prawn, taupok, shredded cucumber, sambal chilli and laksa leaves.
This was my first time having a DIY station for Laksa, and my, did I enjoy it a lot! Fortune Food’s Laksa was different from the usual Laksa I’ve had before as they had an extra special ingredient – shredded cucumbers. Don’t be put off by it, as adding the cucumbers into my Laksa made it crunchier and enjoyable for me. It was also refreshing and cool when eaten with the spicy Laksa gravy. However, I felt that the Laksa gravy could be a little more fragrant and thicker. That being said, it was still an enjoyable dish for me!

4. Muah Chee Set

This set includes glutinous flour dough, grated peanuts mixed with fine sugar and minced fried shallots.
Have these before or after your party, it doesn’t matter! The best part about Muah Chee is the sweet and crunchy peanuts, which was made even better with Fortune Food’s Muah Chee Set. You can roll as much grated peanuts as your glutinous flour dough can hold with this DIY set. The glutinous flour dough was super soft, bouncy and chewy! It was definitely a different take from the melt-in-your-mouth type of glutinous flour dough, but I thought this wasn’t bad at all. The grated peanuts weren’t as sweet as I had imagined it to be, which was fine for me because I do not have much of a sweet tooth, but if you love sweet-tasting food you’ll want to add more of your own sugar. Fortune Food’s Muah Chee Set also comes with an uncommon ingredient – minced fried shallots. The shallots are well-fried and golden, and you’re supposed to roll them on one side of your glutinous flour dough before adding the grated peanuts. With the shallots, this sweet snack became savoury and it felt different to me. I wasn’t used to the flavour as the strong taste of shallots overpowered the grated peanuts, but it might also be because I was used to having my Muah Chee without shallots. It’s an acquired taste, but if you’re open to new things, do try this!
