Fusion Spoon Catering Review - Bento Sets for any Event!
Recently, we are honoured to receive a splendid range of Bento sets from Fusion Spoon! As their name suggest, their range of bento sets includes dishes from different cuisines such as Asian, Malay, Japanese and even Italian! The caterer was very thoughtful in putting the ingredients in different bento compartments to ensure that the ingredients were fresh and not soggy!
Below are the list of Bento sets that we got to savour:
Asian Bento A ($7.50 per set)

Set Includes:
Wok Fried Mixed Vegetables
Sweet & Sour Fish with Capsicum & Tomatoes
Deep Fried Chicken Ngoh Hiang
Seafood Fried Rice
The Wok Fried Mixed Vegetables were fresh and crunchy to taste; It gave off a sweet aftertaste and had a palate cleansing effect to refresh the taste buds after consuming the other fried dishes. The fried fish fillet was coated with thick sweet & sour sauce that was not too overpowering to cover the natural sweetness from the fish. The Deep Fried Chicken Ngoh Hiang gave off an extremely aromatic fragrance due to the five spices used in the dish, the best item of the entire bento! Every mouthful was filled with chicken bits and it was rather addictive - simply because its too tasty! If you are a big fan of local delights, this bento is the ultimate choice for you!

Asian Bento B ($6.00 per set)
Set Includes:
Stir Fried Mixed Vegetables with Egg Tofu
Wok Fried Black Pepper Chicken Cubes
Potato Samosas
Steamed White Rice
The Egg Tofu was coated in a thick sauce that was slightly savory but not too salty. It was served with a generous amount of boiled vegetables that complemented the tofu really well. A source of comfort food that we could simply pair with just the white rice alone! The black pepper chicken bits were rather tender and well-marinated with soy sauce and black pepper. It absorbed the goodness from its sauce which had the aromatic fragrance from the caramelized onions and fresh bell peppers that was stir-fried together with the chicken cubes. A simple bento that is filling and yet nostalgic as it brings about the taste of home.

Nasi Lemak Bento ($6.00)
Set Includes:
Deep fried Chicken Mid Wings
Achar, Ikan Bilis & Peanuts
Sambal Egg
Aromatic Coconut Rice
Nasi Lemak is no stranger to anyone since it is one of the most popular local delights here in Singapore! The moment the lid was uncovered, the room was entirely filled with the aromatic flavours of coconut cream and pandan leaves. The wings were fried till it was golden-brown making it extremely appetizing. Trust us, it was as good as it looked! The portioning was pretty well done as we were able to pair almost every mouthful with a dish, leaving no excess rice towards the end of the meal. The Achar was crunchy and flavourful, a great pickled dish to accompany the savoury peanuts and Ikan bilis throughout the entire meal. We also adore the Sambal Egg as it contained just the right amount of spice!

Japanese Bento A ($8.00)
Set Includes:
Teriyaki Chicken
Mixed Salad with Cherry Tomatoes, Baby Carrots & Goma Dressing
Garlic Fried Rice Topped with Egg Omelette
Chawanmushi
Miso Soup
This Teriyaki Chicken Bento was one of the top picks among our colleagues! The garlic fried rice was fragrant and well fried. The generous portion of omelette given ensured that there were bits of omelette in every bite for extra flavour. When eaten alone, the bento rice was slightly dry, however, the Teriyaki sauce was its savior! Although the sauce was a tad bit salty, it brought flavours to the garlic rice when drizzled on. The miso soup and chawanmushi were also perfect eaten together with the Fried Rice. The boneless Teriyaki Chicken was cooked to perfection, the meat was tender, chewy and perfectly marinated. Although the dishes were slightly on the saltier side, the salad helped to cleanse our palate! The vegetables were fresh and crunchy and it was certainly very thoughtful of the caterer to place the Goma dressing separately so that customers can customize the amount of dressing they want in their salad.

Japanese Bento B ($9.00)
Set Includes:
Pan Grilled Salmon Teriyaki
Mixed Salad with Cherry Tomatoes, Baby Carrots & Goma Dressing
Garlic Fried Rice Topped with Egg Omelette
Chawanmushi
Miso Soup
One of the most sought-after bento set by our colleagues, this bento contains many of our favourite dishes all in one box! The Pan Grilled Salmon Teriyaki was a tad too dry, but the Teriyaki sauce was able to provide the moisture that the Salmon was lacking without overpowering the natural freshness of the salmon fillet. A special point to note is that the baby carrots and lettuce were exploding with freshness with every bite! The chawanmushi was served in a large container, a rather generous portion of steam egg as compared to those that you can find elsewhere. The warm tub of chawanmushi was definitely one of our editors’ favourite! The miso soup was, however, a tad too salty and lacked the taste of miso, but it was topped with lots of kelp and tofu pieces nevertheless. Thumbs up for that!

Premium Bento A ($10.90)
Set Includes:
Grilled Chicken Breast with Tomato Salsa
Broccoli & Baby Carrots with Butter Glaze
Ebi Tempura
Spaghetti Alio Olio
Homemade Cream of Mushroom with Croutons
This Bento set was a unique combination of both Japanese and Italian cuisine and was another hot favourite among our colleagues. The aglio olio was well seasoned and bursting with flavours. The amount of spice was just right - a sprinkle of chilli flakes to make your tongue tingle a little. The large, fresh ebi prawn was well coated and fried in Japanese breaded crumbs, giving it a crunchy exterior but soft interior. However, one downside of this dish was that the chicken breast was slightly tough and it lacked seasoning. The crunchy broccoli and carrots added an overall refreshing touch to the dish. Definitely a dish that we would want to consume again!Â

Premium Bento B ($11.90)
Set Includes:
Pan Grilled Salmon in Lemon Dill Sauce
Broccoli & Baby Carrots in Butter Glaze
Fluffy Mash Potatoes
Fragrant Butter Rice
Homemade Cream of Mushroom Soup
Thought the rice looks a little plain? Fret not! The aromatic butter rice is fragrant and good just on its own! The salmon was well fried and the lemon sauce brought out an additional flavour. The mash potato was topped with a tomatoey, barbeque sauce and it complemented the mashed potato really well. Similar to premium bento A, The crunchy broccoli and carrots were well fried in a creamy white sauce and they added a refreshing crunch to the dish. However, one downside to the premium bento sets was that the mushroom soup was slightly salty even though it was already watered down.

Vegetarian Bento ($5.50)
Set Includes:
Luo Han Chai
Brocolli with Enoki Mushroom
Sweet and Sour Mock Chicken
Deep Fried Potato Samosa
Steamed Fragrant Rice
Fusion Spoon has also specially put together a vegetarian bento set for those with special dietary requirements. There were a total of 4 dishes in extremely generous portions for the vegetarian bento set, and our verdict is that this bento is not only value-for-money but also tastes great! We personally have a vegetarian team member on board and she was pleased with the quantity and quality of the dishes paired together with the steamed rice. The dishes were all packed with sauces hence we didn’t feel that the dish was too dry. We also enjoyed the Samosa as it was bursting with the aromatic curry potatoes once we bit on it. The only recommendation we have to perfect this bento would be to make the dishes less salty.
