It’s one of my favourite seasons of the year (yes, I know I said that last Christmas, but I have many favourite seasons ok?), the durian season! You may have heard that durians are heaty and might cause sore throats and fever, but did you know that durians are also one of the healthiest fruits out there? So, how good (or bad) are durians actually are for you? Let’s find out today!

Pros:
Packed with healthy fats
Rich in monounsaturated fats, these healthy fats present in durians are able to lower cholesterol levels and can reduce heart disease and stroke!
Improves mood & sleep quality
Durians contain tryptophan, which may induce feelings of relaxation and improves your mood when it enters your body. This substance can also control your sleep cycle and may help you to fall asleep easier.
Supports immunity
With vitamin C present, consuming durians can protect your body against harmful free radicals and supports your immunity system against infections and viral attacks.
Balances blood pressure
Rich in potassium, durians can help to maintain the balance of salt and fluids in your body to regulate blood pressure.
Promotes digestion
Durians are also packed with fibre which aids digestion. Vitamin B1 and B3 present in them also helps to promote nutrient absorption, making sure you’re enjoying this delicious treat while getting in important nutrients as well!

Cons:
High-calorie content
However, a small durian about 602g can contain about 885 calories, which is already 44% of the daily recommended calories intake for an average adult!
High in sugar
People suffering from diabetes may also experience a rise in blood sugar if too much durian is consumed in one sitting.
“Heaty” fruit
In Chinese medical terms, durians are often classified as “heaty” fruits which can cause sore throat, mouth ulcers, constipation and an increase in phlegm if consumed too much.
Don’t consume with alcohol!
Durians contain a sulphur compound, which slows down the metabolism and digestion of alcohol. This may result in bloating, ingestion, and a really bad hangover.
Even though durians can be considered as a superfruit, the negative effects of consuming durians should always be a reminder that having too much of this superfruit can be harmful to your body as well. As much as we enjoy having durians, remember to always have them in moderation!
