Milky Fish Soup

A probably well-known hawker food; Fish soup! Though this soup is eaten with fried fish, most of us (I believe) would still see this soup as being ‘healthy’ since it is not too heavy on the taste buds. I personally felt that this soup helped to cleanse and “restart” my palate so that I could have a better taste of the other dishes! However, I find that the fish slices have gotten a little soggy and I believe that may have been due to the fact that they have been placed outside for a little too long during our photoshoot. Despite that, the subtle milkiness of the soup, along with the silky tofu cubes still made this soup rather enjoyable to have and is certainly a nourishing one!

Fragrant Yam Rice w/ Chicken Sausage & Marinated Chicken

This dish surprised me the most among all the 11 dishes. Needless to say, you could probably guess how much I loved this dish! The different elements came together really well. Though the spring onions and the fried onions may have been mostly used as garnishes, I really felt that they had helped to elevate the flavours and aroma of this dish! Let’s not also miss out the real star of this dish- the chunks of yam, which added an extremely aromatic touch to this dish as a whole. I would totally recommend this to all, especially yam lovers!

Wok Fried Seafood Hokkien Noodles

This plate of Hokkien noodles was stir-fried to perfection! The noodles had a slightly chewy consistency, which I’m sure that’s how we would all want our Hokkien noodles to be like. This dish was so plentiful in textures – with the presence of cockles, fishcakes, prawns and some crunch from the chives! I would usually enjoy the soupy-gravy version of Hokkien noodles better, but this dried version didn’t disappoint me either!

Stir Fried Leeks with Tau Kwa

The Tau Kwa was firm and springy with a slight meaty texture, yet still soft to the bite. I’ve ever had Tau Kwa with skin so thick that it became a little too tough to bite into, but this Tau Kwa is unquestionably not the case! Stir-fried with leeks, it sure did make a fragrant great dish to have with your staples!

Homemade Cai Poh Tofu

The silken tofu sits in a very flavourful gravy with a generous amount of chewy prawns and veggies. This to me, gave off a strong essence of home. The taste of soybeans from the tofu really made this dish refreshing to have despite the strong flavours from the gravy. I am also very satisfied with how On & On Diners has managed to reduce the saltiness of the Cai Poh used here thus balancing the overall taste of this savoury dish. Delish!

Braised Oyster Sauce Chicken with Mushroom

I was initially worried that the mushroom taste in this dish would come off too strong and overpower the star of this dish- the Braised Oyster Sauce Chicken. Yet again, I was pleasantly surprised to find this dish more palatable than what I had expected! Just by my first bite, I could say that the flavours from the gravy have been well absorbed into the chicken pieces. However, I would have given this dish a 5/5 had the chicken pieces been more tender to the bite.

Don’t you guys agree that the braising gravy is one of the key elements to a good plate of braised duck? Many times, I hear people expressing their dislike for a certain duck dish due to the gamey taste the duck meat usually comes with, if not prepared well. This wasn’t the case for On & On Diners’ Teochew Style Braised Duck at all! There was a very very slight gamey taste to the duck meat but the gravy that it was braised in had overall made this a very aromatic and comforting dish to have. The nuttiness from the soft braised peanuts was a perfect complement to the duck meat.

Longan Sweet & Sour Fish

Have you ever seen longan in dishes? Well, I haven’t! This was indeed quite a unique take on the usual Sweet & Sour Fish. The use of longan added natural sweetness into this dish! It was really refreshing! I’m usually not a fan of fish and sweet and sour dishes but this dish really got me coming back for seconds.

Tofu Prawns in Chilli Crab Sauce (Served with Golden Mantou)

Golden mantou that are crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside, dipped into Chilli Crab sauce, eaten with chewy prawns and soft tofu… Doesn’t that just sound so appealing? Well, it definitely appetized me! Don’t be fooled by its fiery red colour, you may not get a full-on spicy chilli crab taste from the sauce, but it sure is a wholesome dish that had a hint of spice in it! 😋

Homemade Limited Dim Sum set

I thought it was quite gratifying to see these mini bites on the table as most mini buffet menus do not come with Dim Sums! The fillings inside these Dim Sums were very generous which made them so satisfying to have! I particularly liked the Red Bean Dim Sum – the red bean paste oozed out as I bit into it! It wasn’t overly sweet, and the skin brought a chewy bite to the dim sum! What’s even better? As On & On Diners is halal-certified, your Muslim guests would be able to enjoy these Dim Sums too!

Homemade Mango Sago with Pomelo Sacs

As we slowly move into more humid days ahead, a bowl of Mango Sago could possibly make you feel a whole lot better! This Mango Sago was rich and filled with chunks of sweet mango – as if you’re eating the fruit itself. You also get that sour kick from the Pomelo sacs and sago bit. This was a great way to end off the hearty meal we had that day!
