Shi Fu Ge Review - Seafood Delight

Recently, our team had the pleasure to review Shi Fu Ge’s Ala-carte menu items! We chose 11 different food items which we wanted to try from their extensive menu of delicious Zi Char dishes. They are currently having an attractive promotion for their Crab in the Bag! (U.P $88), going for only $59.90 for the month of December! We thought we definitely had to give both of their popular flavours - the salted egg yolk & spicy crabs a try!

Crab in a bag (Spicy Flavour)

These spicy crabs are like the reminiscent of the Chilli crabs, Singapore’s iconic dish. The spices used are probably similar to that of Chilli crab, but without eggs in the gravy. Spicy, savoury and sweet, it is jam-packed with flavour, sure to leave you wanting more. There were 2 succulent crabs in the bag, and the claws were quite huge! The mussels, clams, and prawns were also rather fresh and are quite sizeable. Extra points to Shi Fu Ge because when the crab in the bag arrived, it was still piping hot!

Mantous

Pair your spicy crabs with the Mantou, and this dish will be perfect. On its own, the Mantou is fluffy in the centre, crisp on the outside and has a slightly sweet flavour! Soak up all the extra spicy sauce in the platter with your mantou and it will be a flavour bomb in your mouth that will blow you away.

Crab in a bag (Salted Egg Yolk Flavour)

This dish has all the same contents as the spicy crabs, with the only difference being the sauce. It is a relatively new addition to the menu and if you would like to try this flavour, there will be an extra charge of $5. With the salted egg trend still on-going, my expectations are high for any dish that is salted egg flavoured. For Shi Fu Ge, the sauce didn’t disappoint at all! It was rich, creamy, with a full-bodied salted egg flavour coating every single bit of the seafood. Calling out all salted egg lovers, this is a must try!

Honey Milk Pork Cubes

Perfect glaze for these pork cubes! The texture is similar to sweet and sour pork, but I prefer how these tasted! Thick, creamy and sweet, the sauce is just a perfect match with the pork cubes. The pork cubes had a good ratio of 2:1 between meat and fat, making it tender on the bite. Even after leaving it out in the open for a period of time, the pork still remained soft and juicy!

Cereal Chicken

Probably a dish that most would order when dining at a Zi Char stall, the cereal chicken really did not disappoint! With chillies and curry leaves incorporated, this dish had a great aroma and slightly spicy kick to it! The chicken pieces came in tender and juicy bite-size. To me. the best part of this dish was the cereal bits. The cereal bits gave a little sweetness to the chicken, and it was so satisfying when paired with rice!

Golden Sand Eggplant

The batter used for the eggplants was fantastic. It was a mix of various spices and herbs and was full of flavour. The eggplant was cooked till soft and tender and had absorbed all the wonderful flavours from the seasoning. Although I am not a person who fancies eggplants, this dish was very palatable for me, because the seasoning was so "on point".

Deep-fried Prawn Rolls

Deep fried goodness! These prawn rolls were so much crispier than your normal prawn rolls, adding on to the delightfulness of this dish! There was a good amount of prawns in every single one of them, which gave a springy texture when you bite into the crispy skin! Shi Fu Ge certainly did not scrimp on the ingredients used, plus points for that!

Salted Egg Chicken Cubes

Considering how good their salted egg crab was, this dish was not far off in terms of taste. Shi Fu Ge’s version of this dish isn’t your typical chicken cubes with the creamy salted egg sauce, it was served dry instead. However, the moment you bite into a piece, the meat juices burst in your mouth. Together with the salted egg flavours, it was a match made in heaven. We really loved this dish!

3 Eggs Spinach

This is a popular dish in Chinese restaurants due to it being so hearty and easily paired with all the other dishes. The salted egg, century egg, and regular egg are combined with chicken broth, forming a creamy and flavourful gravy, so good that you can almost drink it as a soup. The spinach was cooked till tender, and melts in your mouth along with the gravy!

Fried Rice

This was a great plate of fried rice! Lightly salted and well prepared in my opinion. The rice had the perfect texture to it - grainy but not too hard. The little bits of crab meat and chives in the rice gave the dish a wonderful fragrance. Pair it with the spicy sambal chilli for an extra kick and umami flavour!

Fried Tang Hoon

The glass noodles were chewy and delicious! It was done so well and there was the iconic “wok hei” char taste that you would only find on dishes done over a huge fire in a wok.

Overall, the dishes were pretty amazing in quality and we would definitely recommend this to our family and friends!
