Types of Take-Away Packaging in Singapore
In a blink of an eye, it has been a month since the “No Dining-In” measures have been in place with only takeaways allowed.
Have you noticed the different kinds of takeaway packaging that are used in Singapore so far?
Well, with my vast experience in “dabao-ing” for the past month, let me share with you some of the most common ones.
Also, I’m still trying very hard to stop myself from telling the uncle/auntie “auntie, chicken rice DABAO”. Are you the same as me?
Here are the 7 more common types of takeaway packaging used in Singapore!

#1 Styrofoam Boxes
Pretty sure I don’t have to introduce this right? Our legendary “Cai Png” (Mixed Vegetable Rice) packaging. Have you realized the weird numbers or words carved onto the top of the box sometimes? That’s used to differentiate your order and to inform the cashier how much your order cost. These boxes are also normally used for chicken rice, western food etc.

#2 The Brown Paper
What do you usually spot when it comes to packed chicken rice? Brown paper! They are also commonly used for duck rice, roti prata and fried carrot cake! Don’t you think that this piece of brown paper also always makes your food feel and taste extraordinarily delicious?

#3 The Plastic Container
Well, these comes in different shape and sizes! Soup, Rice, Noodles anything you can think of, these badasses surely can hold them! They are also microwaveable! They normally also cost $0.20 more. Haha, if you want some cheap thrills (and to contribute to environment conservation efforts), bring you own containers!

#4 The Plastic Bag with Red String
Ever stared at the auntie or uncle tying the bag in such a swift motion yet ensuring that the end product looks like a water balloon? Because I did! I even try it myself haha. It can be used for noodles, soup and even beverages. Comes in different sizes too, the smallest ones are normally used for your chilli.

#5 The Opeh Leaf
Waaa, ever had fried hokkien prawn noodles or oyster omelet packed in one of these? It’s really delicious and fragrant! Opeh leaf enhances the “wok hei” taste of the dishes! It not as common these days but if you do see one, be sure to try it!

#6 Banana Leaf
Similar to the opeh leaf, banana leaf will enhance the dish packed in it. It releases antioxidants and subtle sweetness. You can find them normally when you buy nasi lemak or otah! Don’t you think the burnt leaves from grilling the otah enhances the flavor with its smokiness? YUMS!

#7 The White Cardboard
Normally used for your take away tze char orders. Don’t you think the boxes makes it easier to carry your food about? Even when it holds your “hor fun”, the gravy will stay intact! The piece of plastic wrapping your food, it is like opening a treasure chest!
Do you know that 1/3 of household waste comes from these packaging? Despite being able to incinerate them, these materials are fossil fuel intensive to produce. In addition, they are extremely pollutive and hard to break down. Environmentally friendly packages are usually more expensive too!
Let’s do our part and bring our own containers when we order takeaways whenever you have the chance!
