Weird Local Food Combinations

Weird Local Food Combinations

Have you ever eaten your food in an uncommon way, only to get weird stares from your friends or family? Well, I have. It always makes me wonder if I’m the only one who eats that way. I mean, we’re all humans with creativity and being Singaporeans who love eating, we always want to improve our eating experience!

Last week, we listed out a few weird local combinations for our followers on Instagram that we may or may not have tried to see if they have tried them before. Read on for some of the weird combinations that we know of and if you’ve tried them before, you might not be the only one!

1. Fries Dipped in Ice Cream

A favourite among our followers, this combination is actually quite common! The funny thing is, it works the best on McDonald’s Vanilla Ice Cream Cone. I admit this is my favourite combination too. It really is amazing how great fries taste when dipped in vanilla ice cream, as the saltiness of the fries complements the sweet and refreshing ice cream well. I’ve tried dipping it with chocolate ice cream once, but it did not give me the same wow-factor when I dipped it with vanilla ice cream, which was a disappointment. If you haven’t tried this, you definitely need to!

2. Butter in Coffee

Image from The New York Times

Butter coffee, commonly known as Kopi Gu You, is a traditional coffee popular among to the older generations where a stick of butter is added into your traditional coffee shop kopi. It is said to be introduced to Hainanese coffee shops in the 1930s, and the reason for adding butter into traditional coffee was to give the coffee a caramelised flavour and smoothen the texture of Robusta coffee beans.

We’ve had almost half of our followers on each side of the vote, with 59% against this combination. Today, it is no longer common to add butter into your kopi, but did you know that your coffee beans are now roasted with butter and sugar to achieve the same effect as butter coffee in the olden days? Sometimes I still notice some of the older generations adding a small slice of butter into their coffee as I pass by coffee shops. Whether it’s due to old habits or the older generation just love the buttery smell, it still is a weird combination to me. I might try it one day and change my mind about it, though.

3. Bak Kwa in between 2 Slices of Bread

I’ve honestly never heard of this, but this combination is surprisingly a common one among our followers! Bread has been proven to make you feel full right after eating it, and I’m not sure if this is a new method to consuming the oily and unhealthy bak kwa so that you’ll eat less of it, but it sure sounds strange to me. If you think about it, this is essentially a sandwich with a really thin patty in the middle and I might still feel unsatisfied as I like my sandwich thick with lots of ingredients in it. For those who love this, why not try adding some meat floss? According to Sunshine, the meat floss will give you an extra crunch to your sweet and salty sandwich.

4. Rice with Potato Chips

I know we have chicken rice-flavoured chips but rice with potato chips? I’m not too sure about this, but one of our followers actually liked it. Rumour has it that you’re supposed to open a bag of chips, pour it in your rice bowl and eat it normally. I can imagine it being popular among the potato chip lovers, especially when having potato chips with rice can seem less unhealthy. There is another recipe though and according to an article written by Michelle Lynn Dinh, by crushing the chips and cooking them with rice in a rice cooker, it actually tastes good. This might be the riskiest recipe I would try one day if my mum ever leaves me home without food for dinner.

5. Milo Powder Mixed in Curry Maggi

Image from Goody Feed

A bonus and the weirdest food combination, milo powder mixed with curry maggi combination went viral a few years ago when someone posted about his invention. After cooking your curry-flavoured instant noodles, you’re supposed to open a packet of milo powder, pour it in your bowl and stir it until the soup turns brown. Surprisingly, a group of risk-takers actually tried it, but only some have mentioned that they will cook it again. I’m not sure about you, but I would prefer having milo and curry instant noodles separately and will most likely not try this recipe.

Now that you’ve read some of the weirdest food combinations that we know, what is the weirdest combination for you? It may be interesting to try unique flavours once in a while, but I rather stick to the classics that have proven to be safe for my stomach.
