Which Mask to Use: N95 or Surgical Mask?
Due to the recent outbreak of Coronavirus, face masks have been in high demand. A simple covering of your nose and mouth can reduce the spread of coronavirus as it helps block outgoing germs from coughs or sneezes. However, do you know which mask is effective?

The N95 is the most recognizable and is an effective mask. As the name suggests, it can block at least 95 percent of tiny particles which are about 0.3 microns that are the hardest to capture. The filtration material on the mask is an electrostatic non-woven polypropylene fibre which makes it harder for particles to pass through.

Surgical masks are less effective than N95s. Some filter as much as 60 to 80 percent of small particles. When worn properly, they can help prevent the spread of the coronavirus by catching droplets when you cough or sneeze. While they can protect you from large droplets and splatter, their looser fit is partly what makes them less effective than N95.
Although both N95 and surgical masks are effective. During this period, most of the masks are sold out or being used by hospital personnel. Therefore, another alternative that getting increasingly popular is homemade masks which are often washable. Even though it is not as effective compared to N95 or surgical masks, it is a simple version of mask and any face covering is better than nothing.
