Why Is Bird Nest So Expensive Yet Many Still Buy?
I bet many of you have heard of bird nest soups/desserts before. But do you know how it is formed and collected? In many parts of Asia, you can find a species of bird called the swiftlet. The species is known as cave swiftlets. What is so unique is that rather than building nests from twigs they form intricately woven threads from their gummy saliva. These threads then harden when exposed to air.
The reason why bird nests are expensive is due to the dangerous retrieval process and the painstaking cleaning process. Each nest takes about 30 to 35 days to build. Interestingly, males primarily build the nests by attaching them to the vertical walls of the limestone caves.
Removing these nests can be dangerous. Retrievers will start by climbing the outside of the cave to attach the ropes. Then, they will drop down the ropes to the cave floor. These ropes will be tied to handmade ladders and poles to ease the collection process. Therefore, there are lots of risks while collecting the bird nest.
A person takes approximately eight hours to clean 10 nests which makes the supply really low and that is one of the reasons why bird nests are so expensive. The price of a kilogram of high quality bird's nest can cost as much as $10,000!
