All About Slow Eating
Ever since young, I’ve been a fast eater. My mother would always reprimand me for eating too fast and would advise me to eat slowly. But why? Apparently, taking smaller bites, chewing each bite slower and longer, can have profound effects. In this article, I have compiled a few benefits of eating slowly.
1. Weight loss

There is an increase in the number of studies proving that when you eat slower, you will consume lesser calories. The reason is that our brain takes around 15 to 20 minutes to be aware that our stomach is taking in food. If we eat slowly, we have time to register that we are full and stop “on time”.
2. Better digestion

When you eat slower, this means that you chew your food longer. Chewing continues to boost saliva production, as well as trigger enzyme release further down the digestive system. Hence the food will be partially broken down before it reaches our stomach. Eating slower can actually lead to fewer digestive problems.
3. Increase your enjoyment of food

In my opinion, if you eat quickly, it’s kind of impossible to really enjoy food. Eating slowly gives you the chance to really appreciate the food’s taste and texture.
4. Less stress

Mindful eating is when you strive to be completely present in the moment. Your attention should be focused on every bite that you take in your mouth. Taking slow bites calm you down and allows you to be present in the moment. This kind of mindfulness, I believe, will lead to a less stressful life. Give it a try!
