How to Take IG-Worthy Food Pics (with your phone)

How to Take IG-Worthy Food Pics (with your phone)

Since the start of the Circuit Breaker, many have turned to cooking at home and re-creating food that they have seen online. After making all these good food, you can’t help but whip out your phone to snap a pic for the gram. Unhappy with the pictures you have taken? Here are some tips you can get to spice up your photos and up your game!

[Disclaimer: All the pictures in this article were taken and edited on my phone.]

Angles

Firstly, the shape of your food can determine the type of shots and angles you can take to show off your culinary skills.

For example, if you are taking a picture of food with lesser height, or flat (prata or smth), a top-down shot would be the best.

A top-down shot, otherwise known as a flat-lay, can show-off the “flat” food. Throw in props that make sense. For example, in this picture, the tea leaves, spoon, and other containers were used as props, because it supports the main focus (earl grey tea) well.

For “taller” foods, you can shoot at a 0 degree angle, a-t the same eye level.

Shooting at this level can show how tall the food actually is. Since most smart phones now have portrait effects, use it! This can separate your food from the background, allowing viewers to be drawn to the food immediately.

If you want to show part of the background, you can shoot at a 45 degrees angle like this!

Props

Use props that support the main food that you are shooting. For example, in this pic, the main focus would be the tubs of ice cream. The props show the flavours of the different ice cream like sour sop, chocolate chips, coconut etc.

Textures

Take note of the different textures, especially the background that you choose.

For example, in this traditional breakfast, the patterns of the table makes the breakfast look more authentic and bring out more of a nostalgia. As compared to using a plain table will give off a different vibe.

Sometimes, a simple background can make a good photo too!
