Milky Alternatives

Milky Alternatives

Finding alternatives or non-dairy substitutes for milk can be a hmmm, let’s say a curious approach. What tastes good? Which one will I fancy? Or which one would be the best for me? Non-dairy milk has gained popularity over recent years, with changing lifestyles and a generally more health conscious society. Here are 5 substitutes for milk, and the benefits that each of them would bring to the table, or your cereal.

Soy Milk

Soy milk is probably the 1st variation of milk that we’ve had, other than milk milk. The fresh soybean milk that we have had in hawkers, and the silky beancurd dessert that we love. Soy milk is free of cholesterol and has a low content of saturated fat. Fun fact: Soy milk has the same amount of protein as cow’s milk but is lower in calories!

Almond Milk

Almond milk is vegan but for those that are allergic to nuts, this is the one you should stay away from (duh). Almond milk is made from grounded almonds and filtered water. It is low in calories, but out of all the other milk substitutes, almond milk is… meh. That’s my opinion. But I don’t know, you may like it!

Coconut Milk

Okay even though it’s a cocoNUT, it isn’t part of the nuts family so those allergic to nuts can enjoy this. Out of all the alternatives, coconut milk is my favourite. No, it’s not the coconut milk we use to cook curry. Coconut milk contains more fat than other alternatives but for those that are unable to consume dairy products, this is a must try! I have it with Milo in the mornings.

Oat Milk

Oat milk is fully packed with vitamins and minerals and contains lots of fiber. Oat milk can also lower your blood cholesterol, as it contains soluble fiber with hearth health benefits. For those with dietary restrictions, oat milk is a great fit. It is soy, nut and lactose free, and is also vegan!

Rice Milk

For those that are lactose intolerant, and has soy or nut allergies, this is the alternative that is least likely to cause an allergy. However, children and expecting mothers are not recommended to solely rely on rice milk, as they do not contain natural sources of calcium and vitamin.

Try out these milk alternatives today! Go in with an open mind, if you are expecting these to taste like fresh cow’s milk, then let me save you a step and just go grab your beloved fresh milk instead.
